Effect of Planktonic Productivity on the Biogeochemical Cycling of Mercury in Lakes

Mercury (Hg) is an element of concern as anthropogenic emissions have largely surpassed those from natural sources and the metal is known for its biomagnification in aquatic food chains. Aquatic systems such as lakes are the most critical and important biogeochemical reactors in the terrestrial environment to transfer atmospherically and soil derived Hg into monomethyl-mercury (MeHg), the key component for Hg enrichment in the aquatic food chain. Due to its high affinity to bind to organic components the biogeochemical cycle of Hg is largely coupled to that of carbon. The goal is to determine the effect of natural planktonic productivity and thus of algae derived organic matter in lakes on the biogeochemical cycle of mercury throughout the seasons. Of special interest is the transport to the sediments. How, when and where is Hg transported to the sediment?

Why is iodine not released from tropical soils? A case study from Costa Rica.

Costa Rica
Biologischen Reservat Antonio Manuel Brenes (ReBAMB) in Costa Rica
