Institute of Acoustics and Dynamics (InAD)

The Technical University of Braunschweig is one of the leading technical universities in Germany and offers its employees a wide range of modern, challenging, and diverse jobs. Approximately 3,800 employees work not only in research and teaching, but also in administration, technology, and skilled trades to ensure that our university successfully fulfills its educational mission for over 15,000 students and around 100 trainees through a broad spectrum of teaching and research, excellent facilities, and a personal atmosphere.

The Institute of Acoustics and Dynamics (InAD) is seeking, at the earliest possible date (ideally starting from November 01, 2026), a

Student Assistant (m/f/d)
CFD and TBL for Vibroacoustic Simulations
(40 - 80 hours per month - initially 6 months, with the possibility of extension)

to support the D2A research project in CFD-informed modelling of turbulent boundary layers (TBL) and their coupling to vibroacoustic simulations. The initial contract is for six months, with the possibility of extension. Building on an existing TBL-to-elPaSo pipeline, you will help implement an interface that transfers CFD-derived flow quantities to the TBL excitation model.

Your tasks:

  • Support the development of a CFD/RANS model for a curved aircraft structure and its verification using a boundary-layer reference case, mesh studies and numerical convergence studies.
  • Develop Python tools to extract local flow quantities, such as boundary-layer thickness, friction velocity and flow direction, and map them to the structural model.
  • Help connect these quantities to the existing stochastic TBL pressure generator, compare loads and selected elPaSo responses, and document reproducible simulation workflows.

Your profile:

  • You are enrolled in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computational engineering or a related programme, preferably at advanced Bachelor’s or Master’s level.
  • You have practical experience with an established CFD solver, such as OpenFOAM or ANSYS Fluent, including meshing, boundary conditions and RANS turbulence modelling.
  • You have good Python skills for numerical data processing and visualisation, and a good command of English.
  • You can work with existing simulation models and scripts following focused onboarding. Experience with Linux, Git or HPC is an advantage; knowledge of TBL, FEM or elPaSo is welcome.
  • You work carefully and independently and are interested in turbulent boundary layers and vibroacoustics. Please describe a specific CFD or Python project in your application and state your earliest possible starting date.

What we offer:

  • Hourly pay of €15.20 for students in Bachelor’s programmes or €15.81 for students in Master’s programmes
  • A special year-end payment
  • Practical experience in CFD, scientific software and vibroacoustic dataset generation within a motivated research team
  • A wide range of sports activities and a vibrant campus in an international environment
