Basics of Complex Machine Elements and Drives

Objectives of the course

The module continues the “Basics of Design / Grundlagen des Konstruierens” conveyed content. The aim is to impart a more extensive knowledge of technical systems, their application, function and structure. Knowledge of complex machine elements such as bearings or shaft-hub connections as well as gears and drives is imparted. The students should get an overview of the interaction of different machine elements as well as learning to understand the functionality of complete assemblies and machines.

In addition, the students will get to know the most important drive options as well as their properties and design variants.

Content

  • Shaft-Hub-connections
  • Bearing
  • Gears
  • Snap-on connectors
  • Combustion engines
  • Electric engines
  • Mechanical transmission links and gears
  • Fluid drives

Structure

The module “Basics of Complex Machine Elements and Drives/ Grundlagen komplexer Maschinenelemente und Antriebe” consists of the events

  • Basics of complex machine elements and drives – lecture
  • Basics of complex machine elements and drives – exercise
  • Design Practice 2 – practical exercise

Latest information

More information for the procedure can be found on the StudIP event website.

next exam date: 2025-08-04

Start: 04.30 p.m.

StudIP – Lecture

StudIP – Tutorial

StudIP – practical Exercise

Dates

The lecture takes place in the winter semester.

Lecture

The students will learn in the lecture the foundation to achieve the qualification goals. Theoretical content is conveyed through current research projects as well as experience from the industry. The reference toward specific example products will be produced through the usage of a variety of exhibits. The lecture will be video recorded and made available online afterwards.

Tutorial

The tutorial – accompanying the lecture – will deepen selected subject areas from the lecture based ton examples. In the specific application of the content conveyed in the lecture is dealt with more intensively.

Practical Exercise

The practical exercise “Design Engineering Exercise 1 / Konstruktive Übung 1” is based on the practical exercise “Design Engineering Exercise 1 / Konstruktive Übung 1”. Hence, a basic understanding of technical drawings is therefore required. The aim of the event is to look at complicated assemblies in form of design calculations and a complete representation of technical drawings. This is done through independent editing of design engineering tasks. The students create drawings and lay out simple machine elements and assemblies.

Documents, downloads and video recordings

If not discussed differently in the lecture, all documents will be provided for download on StudIP. The video recordings for the lecture (and tutorial) will be provided on StudIP, if available.

Office hours and Notes

Please discuss regular office hours with your supervisor directly.

Examination Modalities

With the examination, the contents of the lecture and the exercise are questioned in from of knowledge and comprehension questions as well as arithmetic tasks.
Type: exam
Time: 120 min

The course performance is checked through the successful editing of a semester accompanying paper in the field of technical drawing and the standardized representation of technical components and assemblies. This takes place in the context of the event “Design Engineering Exercise 1 / Konstruktive Übung 1”.
Type: Design Engineering Drafts and Drawings as Homework
Time: During the Semester
