Exzellenzcluster PhoenixD

Realizing precision optical systems quickly and cost-effectively using additive manufacturing: this is PhoenixD's vision. Researchers from the fields of mechanical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and chemistry will work together in the future on the simulation, manufacture, and application of optical systems. Until now, such systems have mostly been manufactured from glass in small steps, often even by hand. Experts from various disciplines now want to work together on a digitized manufacturing system so that customized products can be realized.

The system opens up far-reaching possibilities for applications. In agriculture, for example, the use of chemicals could be minimized. With the new systems, a sensor can detect weeds, which are then treated with lasers in a targeted manner. Until now, optical components have been too expensive to manufacture for such applications. Individualized optics for the medical sector is another possible application. For example, it will be possible to perform patient-specific blood analysis for the diagnosis of diseases.
