The Institute of Geomechanics and Geotechnics has been organizing the specialist seminar 'Measurements in Geotechnical Engineering' in even-numbered years since 1994. The positive response of the participants, the high quality of the contributions, the great interest in the conference proceedings and, last but not least, our work in this field, encourage us in our efforts to offer this symposium as a forum for experts from industry, authorities, research institutions and engineering offices.

To check the load-bearing behavior and load assumptions, measurements are carried out on structures both during construction and after completion. In the standardization, the observation method is described as a construction-accompanying procedure. The aim is to detect damage to structures and the subsoil at an early stage, e.g. due to overloading during the construction period or during operation. In the future, individual measurements will increasingly be replaced by continuous monitoring systems for structural monitoring tasks after completion of the structure. This seminar will report on the current state of measurement technology and new developments. The focus will be on geotechnical problems.
