Content

The course provides a detailed introduction to the in-flight systems of aircraft, with a particular focus on the design, integration and networking of these systems. Advanced design aspects such as thermal management and overall system simulation techniques are covered in depth. This provides students with the necessary skills to meet modern challenges in aircraft construction.
The course teaches the central processes of systems engineering that are required for the development of complex aircraft. To this end, a wide range of topics in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) are covered, such as product development cycles, the systematic selection and development of system architectures, abstraction and modelling techniques as well as various analysis and evaluation methods in the design process. Open-source simulation programs for dynamic modelling and simulation-based optimisation are also introduced. By learning the SysML modelling language, students gain practical experience with industrial standards and processes for system and project modelling and documentation.  Finally, students learn how to evaluate technologies and carry out global life cycle

Qualification goals

Students learn key aspects, methods and standards of modern, model-based product development (Model-Based Systems Engineering, MBSE), illustrated using the example of various types of aircraft and aircraft on-board systems. This provides them with the necessary skills to meet today's integrative challenges in aircraft construction (and other complex products).
Students acquire the following competences:

  •     Understanding of the design and operation of aircraft on-board systems (electrical, pneumatic and mechanical)
  •     Knowledge and active application of design principles and methods in system architecture development
  •     Understanding and overview of modern model-based product development, including common abstraction and modelling approaches
  •     Active use of industrial standards for product development (ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288), modelling (SysML, Modelica) and evaluation
  •     Creation of dynamic overall system simulations and simulation-based optimisations
  •     Carrying out life cycle assessments taking into account their sustainability
