The results from the axial tensile tests on screws in the "Fatigue of CLT screws" research project

The results were published in an article by Moritz Tronnier, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mike Sieder and Dr.-Ing. Peter Niebuhr in the journal "Bautechnik".

Key findings:

  • Statistically significant differences were found in the fatigue behaviour of various commercially available screw types, which underlines the relevance of a differentiated approach.
  • The determined Wöhler lines show an inclination of approximately k = 3 and thus confirm the categorisation of self-drilling wood screws as sharply notched components.
  • For practical design, it can be seen that notch case 71 in accordance with DIN EN 1993-1-9 reliably represents the fatigue behaviour and is on the safe side.

With this article and the underlying investigations, IBHolz is making a significant contribution to the knowledge gained with regard to the fatigue behaviour of connections in timber construction.
