Breathing Mercury: Researchers share videos with first findings and fieldwork stories on mercury cycling in Costa Rican tropical forests

How do tropical forests help remove mercury from our atmosphere? What role do trees, leaves, and soils play in regulating this global process? And how do vegetation and seasonal changes influence these natural dynamics?

To answer these questions, researchers from the Department of Environmental Geochemistry travelled to Costa Rica as part of the DFG project FORVEST-HG Project — Investigating the Role of Vegetation and Seasonality in the Tropical Forest Mercury Cycle. There, the team explored how different tropical forests shape the mercury cycle, while also documenting both the scientific work and their personal experiences throughout the project.
