How have media technologies given form to dreams, desires and imagined worlds?

Under the title Technics of the Imaginary the 2027 Arts & Media Archaeology Summer School explores the ways media have made the absent present, the distant near and the impossible imaginable. From panoramas, magic lanterns, stereoscopes, and other nineteenth-century ‘devices of wonder’ to contemporary immersive and digital media, we ask how media technologies have functioned as instruments for imagining elsewhere and otherwise.

Participants will learn to approach media history beyond linear narratives of technological progress, engaging with wonder, imaginary and obsolete media, colonial visual cultures, and alternative media histories. Join us in Antwerp from 5 – 9 July 2027 to study media archaeology by thinking, making, experimenting and imagining. Find out more
