Starting from as soon as possible, the Institut für Flugführung is looking for a

Research Associate / Postdoc / Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) in the field of development of an air traffic system framework
(EG 13 TV-L, full-time/part-time)


The position is to be filled on a fixed-term basis for a 3 years period. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.

As part of a national funding program, the Institute of Flight Guidance is developing a central and modular open-source simulation environment that enables the evaluation and optimization of aircraft and their operation within the air transport system.
The core task is the development and coordination of a run-time infrastructure as a central interface, which integrates various simulation modules from partner universities and research institutions.

Your tasks

  • Development of a modular, open software architecture (open source)
  • Design, coordination, and implementation of interfaces for the integration of external simulation tools from participating partners
  • Development and integration of core functionalities (time management, data storage, I/O, navigation and airspace data)
  • Support in the validation of the overall system using realistic scenarios
  • Coordination with project partners and alignment of technical requirements
  • You will be involved in teaching at the University (preparation and implementation of courses as well as supervision of students’ work).

Your Qualifications

  • You have a completed university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computational Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • You have solid programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, or similar languages).
  • You have experience with software architectures, interface design, and modularization.
  • You have knowledge of simulation technologies and distributed systems is an advantage.
  • Experience in the open-source environment is desirable.
  • You have very good knowledge of the German and English language.
  • You are flexible, can perform under pressure and work well in a team.
