Collaboration pays off!

In an exciting award ceremony and gala of the 10th National German Sustainability Award - with laureates such as Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Annie Lennox, Dr. Jane Goodall, Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Dr. Bertrand Piccard - the BMBF funded research consortium "BioBZ" won the National German Sustainability Award for Research!

The BioBZ-projekt was coordinated by the Cutec Research Center of the TU Clausthal - with the project partners Eisenhuth GmbH, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Institute of Chemical and Electrochemical Process Engineering of the TU Clausthal, Eurawasser GmbH - and our institute -the Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Chemistry! In the BioBZ project, our institute contributed with its longstanding and well-known expertise in microbial fuel cell research and residue analysis.

The research tasks of our BioBZ-team at the TU Braunschweig comprised the study of electrodes and electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation in microbial electrolysis cells, the development of methods for the cultivation of high performing electrochemically active (current producing) bacteria and the study of the removal of micropollutants (such as pharmaceutical residues) from wastewater.

For the great work, I would like to thank Prof. Michael Sievers as the project coordniator and especially our three PhD students - Robert Keith Brown, Juliane Naujoks and Sebastian Riedl!
