Course offering for Students

Course offering for Students

[Translate to English:]

Not only knowing about digitalisation, but also being able to benefit from it, being able to fully exploit the potential of media, and being prepared for tomorrow's world of work with future skills - all this comprises digital literacy.

From winter semester 2021/22 onward, students at TU Braunschweig will have the opportunity to obtain a certificate of their competence acquisition in the field of media, information, and digital transformation: the Digital Literacy Certificate.

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy means being able to navigate in a digital world. Literacy actually means "alphabetisation", but in this context it means as much as "knowledge", "understanding", or "ability to deal with something". Digital literacy is built up from the areas media literacy, information literacy, and ICT (information and communication technologies)-literacy (based on the Framework for 21st Century Learning).

Media literacy includes understanding (digital) media, critically questioning them, and being able to create your own media content.

Information literacy means being able to access, organise, evaluate and use information productively.

ICT literacy refers to understanding and being able to apply the digital transformation and associated technologies, methods and ways of thinking.

Why is there a Digital Literacy Certificate?

Digital literacy skills are essential for tomorrow's world of work, but also for today's everyday life and for dealing with university curricula. For students, this means having to acquire these competences. The Digital Literacy Certificate helps at this point by combining courses on the topic of digital literacy and at the same time giving students the opportunity to prove their acquisition of competences in this area.

Who is the certificate aimed at?

The certificate is aimed at students of all subjects at the TU Braunschweig and takes place as part of the courses in the interdisciplinary qualification (pool). Participation is free of charge.

In addition to attending the classes within the framework of the certificate, students are still free to have the completed courses accredited within the framework of the interdisciplinary qualification (or other interdisciplinary modules).

How is the certificate structured?

To obtain the certificate, three basic courses must be attended, which are complemented by further classes from an open elective area. In total, the certificate comprises a workload of 15 CP. Students can take the certificate over the entire period of their studies. They are completely free to choose when they would like to attend the respective courses.

If you are aware of other courses that could also fit thematically with the certificate, please feel free to contact us.

If you have already taken courses that belong to the certificate in the pool area during your previous studies, you can now have them accredited for the certificate. Please feel free to contact us!

How can I obtain the certificate?

In order to receive the Digital Literacy Certificate, you must prove that you have attended the corresponding courses from the basic and elective areas to a total of 15 CP. Verifications can be, for example, a certificate of attendance, a P-form or the transcript of records (grades), provided that the attended course can be recognised.

As soon as you have attended all relevant courses, send an email with a list of the courses to be credited as well as the corresponding verification to digilit(at)tu-braunschweig.de.

Please send us all the certificates in just one e-mail just when you have completed all the courses so that nothing gets lost. Individual certificates will not be recognised.

As soon as the verification has been checked for completeness, the certificate will be issued in paper form. You will then receive an email from us informing you that the certificate has been completed. You can then pick up your Digital Literacy Certificate at the information desk of the Braunschweig University Library.

Any questions?

The certificate is a joint offer of the Project House, the University Library and the Institute of Economic informatics – Department of Information Management (wi²) in cooperation with other TU institutions as part of the open elective area.

The Digital Literacy Certificate Team will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the structure of the course, crediting or any other queries.
