Supervision of theses at the IIR

Status: May 2023

Dear students,

here is some information about theses at the IIR.

Questions on the following topics are supervised at the IIR:

  • Global/International Security Policy (incl. traditional and non-traditional security risks of all kinds, incl. crime prevention)
  • International economic policy (especially in the areas of supply chain regulation, crime control, WTO, OECD, EU)
  • International organizations, norms, and global governance in selected policy areas (see above, UN system, EU and others, plus education policy, SDGs)
  • Global policy diffusion (areas see above, plus plastic regulation, plus world society theory).
  • International city networks and global governance

Additional topics may be suggested, but a commitment of supervision cannot necessarily be given.

All topics must be addressed from an International Relations perspective, otherwise they cannot be registered at IIR as a thesis.

Formally, successful attendance of the IB elective modules is not required, but it is strongly recommended, as these modules prepare you for the thesis and you need to know (and, if necessary, revise) the content of these modules for a successful thesis.

If you want to write an MA thesis, you should also have taken the project module in the IR, as this prepares you for the MA thesis.

At the IIR, the supervision of theses is usually done directly by Prof. Dr. Anja P. Jakobi.

If you are interested in these topics, please summarize your initial thoughts on the research question and on the research of existing literature as far as possible in writing and report to the office hours.

A synopsis must be prepared before registering the paper. There must be at least 8 weeks between the first meeting and the registration for the thesis in order to be able to clarify all questions that may arise.

During the lecture-free period (semester break/holiday period), the time periods for discussion and correction are extended. It is therefore advisable to clarify questions regarding final theses during the semester so that you can use the time during the semester break to work on your thesis independently.

Starting in winter semester 2023/24, there will again be a colloquium for final theses (as a short block event), where you will present your work to other members of the institute/graduates.

Further information on scientific work or writing an exposé can be found under "Literature and Documents".
