The convergence of robotics and artificial intelligence marks a paradigm shift in the way technical systems interact with the physical world. Modern robotic systems no longer operate as isolated machines: they perceive their environment, make context-dependent decisions, and adapt their behavior in real time.
The Institute of Robotics and Process Informatics at TU Braunschweig develops the foundations for this next generation of robotic systems. Our research encompasses adaptive motion and task planning, close human-robot interaction and collaboration, as well as the integration of networked robotic platforms into complex environments. We investigate and shape how machines understand humans, how they communicate reliably in industrial and cyber-physical systems, and how new application areas — from collaborative manufacturing to assistive robotics — can be unlocked through advances in perception and machine learning.
We work at the intersection of control engineering, sensor data processing, human factors, and applied AI, validate our research on real systems and applications, and advance it in close collaboration with industry partners.
From the lab to real-world applications – together with companies and research partners, we develop cognitive robotics solutions from the initial concept to a fully functional prototype. Learn how we can work together. → Collaborations & Partnerships
As part of a joint research project, our partner institute at TU BS (Institute of Mechanics and Adaptronics) is seeking interested students for research projects and theses (contact: bennet.freiling@tu-braunschweig.de):
Development and Validation of a CAN Bus Interface for the Control of a Mobile Robot Platform
Bachelor- / Studien- / Masterarbeit
An ongoing project at the IMA deals with the robot-based assembly of large, compliant components. Within this project, a method is required to control the mobile robot platform in a targeted and repeatable way. The platform is equipped with Mecanum wheels and is therefore capable of both translational and rotational motion.
At present, the platform is controlled exclusively via a manual remote control, which means that no preprogrammed motion sequences can be executed. The aim of the student project is therefore to develop a concept for connecting to the platform that enables programmatic control of its driving motions. In particular, the use of the CAN bus is to be considered, for example by means of a PLC (SPS).
As part of the project, suitable approaches are to be researched, evaluated, and implemented in practice. Finally, the developed solution is to be examined through experiments and assessed in terms of functionality and reliability.
