Starting from 1 Febuary 2027, the Institute of Flight Guidance is looking for a

Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) in Atmospheric Icing and Meteorological Research for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems
(EG 13 TV-L, full-time)


The position is to be filled on a fixed-term basis for a period of 3 years, and is intended for pursuing a doctorate based on the research conducted within the project.

The position is available in the work group “Airborne Meteorology and Measurement Techniques” at the Institute of Flight Guidance Institute. The work group focuses on atmospheric research, in particular concerning aerosol and air pollution, wind energy, and feedback processes in polar areas, using different airborne platforms (drones, aircraft, helicopter-borne sonde).

As the research project may be transferred to another university during its duration, geographical flexibility and openness to a possible relocation are desirable.

Your tasks

  • You will compile and analyse atmospheric icing climatologies based on meteorological data from measurements and numerical models.
  • You will investigate meteorological conditions relevant to the operation and development of uncrewed aircraft systems in icing environments.
  • You will contribute to research projects and the preparation of scientific project proposals.
  • You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and participate in national and international conferences.
  • You will contribute to teaching and the supervision of student’s work.

Your Qualifications

  • You have a degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of engineering, meteorology, physics or related.
  • You have a very good command of German and English.
  • You have a strong background in meteorology or atmospheric sciences.
  • You have extensive experience in processing and analysing large data sets, particularly GRIB and NetCDF data.
  • You are flexible, able to work independently and as part of a team, and can perform well under pressure.
  • You have very good programming skills in Python/Matlab.
  • You have experience with meteorological model reanalysis, or observational data.
  • You intend to pursue a doctorate.
