The SEED research project is investigating how traffic models can be calibrated and validated more accurately by using movement data (floating car data). The aim is to reconstruct traffic flows across the entire road network using movement data alone, thereby supplementing or partially replacing conventional traffic surveys.
SEED aims to develop a method for estimating traffic demand (source-destination matrix) from a single data source. The aim is to examine the extent to which movement data – despite its sampling nature and measurement uncertainties – can provide a consistent and reliable basis for the validation and calibration of traffic models. In the long term, this should significantly improve the timeliness and accuracy of traffic planning models.
The project examines various methodological approaches to endogenous traffic demand estimation. Floating car data is used to estimate traffic demand within a transport network. The extent to which these estimates approximate actual traffic demand is then evaluated. To this end, a large-scale measurement campaign is being conducted within the city of Braunschweig to obtain validation data.
The Institute for Transportation and Urban Engineering (IVS) at the Technical University of Braunschweig is responsible for the methodological development and validation of endogenous demand estimation. It analyzes the suitability of floating car data for model calibration and investigates how it can be used to improve the consistency and quality of existing traffic models.
