Objective of the Research Project
Advanced wastewater treatment processes have an extensive demand for financial and natural resources. At the same time these processes eliminate substances which could be reused as a potential energy source (organic compounds for biogas production) or as plant nutrients (e.g. phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium) in agriculture.
The objective of the project is to identify relevant material flows (municipal and industrial wastewaters, partial flows, sewage sludge) under economic points of view and aspects of resource protection and to develop and optimize suitable processes for the treatment of these material flows and for the recycling of resources.
In order to define adequate material flows and in order to to determine which processes and concepts are to be favored for their handling and treatment, resource economic instruments are used.
The focus of the research is, on the one hand, to minimize the resource demand necessary for the reuse and recycling of resources and, on the other hand, to adapt product design and quality criteria to the requirements of the customers..
