Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cells
With more than 15,000 students and 3,800 employees, the Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of Germany´s leading institutes of technology. It stands for strategic and performance-oriented thinking and acting, relevant research, committed teaching, and the successful transfer of knowledge and technologies to the economy and society. We consistently advocate for family friendliness and equal opportunities.
Our research focuses are mobility, engineering for health, metrology, and city of the future. Strong engineering and natural sciences are our core disciplines. These are closely interconnected with economics, social and educational sciences and humanities.
Our campus is located in the midst of one of the most research-intensive regions in Europe. We work successfully together with over 20 research institutions in our neighborhood as we do with our international partner universities.
Starting from 01.06.2026, the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cells (ivb) is looking for a
Research Associate / Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) in the field of Emission measurements for sustainable aviation
(EG 13 TV-L, full-time)
The position is to be filled on a fixed-term basis for a period of 3 years. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.
Aviation is a major contributor to global climate change. More than half of this impact stems from non-CO₂ effects, which arise from complex combustion and mixing processes inside the engine and their interaction with the atmosphere. At the same time, these emissions degrade air quality and directly affect human health. To address this, the EU is planning stricter regulations but is encountering limits due to the high complexity:
1) Current methods for demonstrating emissions effects at high altitude remain insufficient.
2) Predictive estimation of the impact of sustainable fuels on non-CO₂ emissions proves very challenging.
The Technische Universität Braunschweig tackles this problem with a coupled aircraft operations and performance simulation model that integrates an emissions module. The goal is a low-emission fleet management system that responds robustly to different engines, operating points, and fuels (including SAF).
For validation, in a project carried out jointly by the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery (IFAS) and the ivb extensive engine tests are conducted on a fully functional high-bypass turbofan - an exclusive capability at TU BS in Europe. Thermodynamic parameters, gaseous emissions, soot particles, and precursors are recorded and evaluated under takeoff and cruise conditions. At the ivb, a measurement system will be designed, tested, and subsequently deployed on short- and medium-haul engines building on existing guidelines.
