Digital Fabrication and Robotic Construction (TV-L E13, 75%, limited to 6 months)
The Professorship of Digital Construction is part of the Institute for Structural Design (ITE) at Technische Universität Braunschweig. In research and teaching, it focuses on the potentials of digital design and fabrication methods for architectural design and construction.
A central focus of our work lies in digital fabrication processes—particularly robotic construction, additive manufacturing, and circular construction with sustainable building materials. Our research infrastructure includes extensive digital fabrication facilities at a 1:1 building scale, such as the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory and the Digital Construction Site.
As part of a current project, we are developing a mobile “Digital Field Factory” that enables digital fabrication processes to be demonstrated and tested directly on the building site. The system will support research and teaching in robotic fabrication and digital construction through hands-on, real-scale learning scenarios.
To support this project, we are seeking a Research Assistant with a background in Mechanical Engineering to contribute to the design, development, and implementation of the Digital Field Factory.
Your profile:
- You have completed a scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field with very good results.
- You have experience or a strong interest in robotics, digital fabrication systems, or automated manufacturing technologies.
- Ideally, you have experience with robot programming, sensor integration (e.g., laser scanning), or end-effector development.
- You are motivated to work in an interdisciplinary research environment involving architecture, engineering, and digital construction.
- You work independently and in a structured manner and enjoy collaborative project development.
- Good English language skills are required; German language skills are advantageous.
Your responsibilities:
You will contribute to the conceptualization and realization of a transportable Digital Field Factory, which serves as a teaching and research platform for robotic fabrication in existing buildings.
Your tasks include:
- Conceptual design and technical development of a transportable Digital Field Factory system.
- Development of a foldable enclosure structure suitable for on-site deployment at existing buildings.
- Integration and setup of a collaborative lightweight robot for safe human–robot interaction.
- Integration of a 3D laser scanner for digital surveying and documentation of existing structures.
- Development and testing of modular robotic end-effectors for additive and subtractive fabrication processes.
- Participation in participatory workshops with students to integrate user requirements related to functionality, accessibility, and usability.
For this position we offer:
- Participation in an innovative research and teaching project at the intersection of robotics, digital fabrication, and architecture.
- Hands-on work with large-scale robotic fabrication systems and digital construction technologies.
- An interdisciplinary working environment spanning architecture, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering.
- A dynamic and collaborative research team with an international background.
- A temporary position (75%, TV-L E13) for 6 months.
Application:
Technische Universität Braunschweig is striving to reduce under-representation in all areas and positions within the meaning of the NGG. Therefore, applications from women are particularly welcome. Handicapped persons with equal qualifications are preferred. Proof must be enclosed. Applications from people of all nationalities are welcome. Depending on the assignment of duties and fulfilment of personal requirements, payment is up to EG TV-L E13.
Please send your application, with reference to the position you are applying for, by 31.01.2026 at the latest, together with a letter of motivation, a portfolio of works, a curriculum vitae and certificates.
