Research Assistant (m/f/d) in Architecture and Digital Construction – Focus on Teaching (TV-L E13)

Job Advertisment Teaching

The new professorship for Digital Construction will strengthen the Institute for Structural Design in terms of both content and personnel. In the course of the expansion, the following positions are to be filled on a full- or part-time basis:

Research Assistant for Digital Design and Construction with focus on teaching (E13)

The Professorship of Architecture and Digital Construction is part of the Institute for Structural Design (ITE) at Technische Universität Braunschweig. In research and teaching, it focuses on the potentials of digital design and fabrication methods for architectural design.
A central focus of our work lies in digital fabrication processes—particularly additive manufacturing, digital circular construction, and digital construction using sustainable building materials. For our research, we have access to extensive digital fabrication facilities at a 1:1 building scale, including the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory, the Digital Construction Site, and the Earth Construction Laboratory.
Our research covers a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary formats, ranging from DFG-funded fundamental research, to applied research, and contract research in collaboration with regional construction companies. A particular concern is the early integration of research topics into teaching and, together with architecture students, the design-based exploration of the future potential of digitalization in construction.
In undergraduate teaching, students acquire comprehensive knowledge of the current academic discourse as well as fundamental skills in visual programming and digital fabrication in the compulsory module Digital Construction. In advanced teaching formats, these competencies can be further developed and applied architecturally in design projects and theses.
The ITE team is international and diverse. Open, respectful, and collegial exchange forms the basis of our collaboration.

Research Assistant (m/f/d) in Architecture and Digital Construction – Mechanical Engineering (TV-L E13)

Job Advertisment Mechanical Engineering

Digital Fabrication and Robotic Construction (TV-L E13, 75%, limited to 6 months)

The Professorship of Digital Construction is part of the Institute for Structural Design (ITE) at Technische Universität Braunschweig. In research and teaching, it focuses on the potentials of digital design and fabrication methods for architectural design and construction.

A central focus of our work lies in digital fabrication processes—particularly robotic construction, additive manufacturing, and circular construction with sustainable building materials. Our research infrastructure includes extensive digital fabrication facilities at a 1:1 building scale, such as the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory and the Digital Construction Site.

As part of a current project, we are developing a mobile “Digital Field Factory” that enables digital fabrication processes to be demonstrated and tested directly on the building site. The system will support research and teaching in robotic fabrication and digital construction through hands-on, real-scale learning scenarios.

To support this project, we are seeking a Research Assistant with a background in Mechanical Engineering to contribute to the design, development, and implementation of the Digital Field Factory.

Your profile:

  • You have completed a scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field with very good results.
  • You have experience or a strong interest in robotics, digital fabrication systems, or automated manufacturing technologies.
  • Ideally, you have experience with robot programming, sensor integration (e.g., laser scanning), or end-effector development.
  • You are motivated to work in an interdisciplinary research environment involving architecture, engineering, and digital construction.
  • You work independently and in a structured manner and enjoy collaborative project development.
  • Good English language skills are required; German language skills are advantageous.

Your responsibilities:

You will contribute to the conceptualization and realization of a transportable Digital Field Factory, which serves as a teaching and research platform for robotic fabrication in existing buildings.

Your tasks include:

  • Conceptual design and technical development of a transportable Digital Field Factory system.
  • Development of a foldable enclosure structure suitable for on-site deployment at existing buildings.
  • Integration and setup of a collaborative lightweight robot for safe human–robot interaction.
  • Integration of a 3D laser scanner for digital surveying and documentation of existing structures.
  • Development and testing of modular robotic end-effectors for additive and subtractive fabrication processes.
  • Participation in participatory workshops with students to integrate user requirements related to functionality, accessibility, and usability.

For this position we offer:

  • Participation in an innovative research and teaching project at the intersection of robotics, digital fabrication, and architecture.
  • Hands-on work with large-scale robotic fabrication systems and digital construction technologies.
  • An interdisciplinary working environment spanning architecture, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering.
  • A dynamic and collaborative research team with an international background.
  • A temporary position (75%, TV-L E13) for 6 months.
