Dedekind Kolloquium

Das Department Mathematik der Technischen Universität Braunschweig lädt Sie herzlich ein zum ersten Dedekind Kolloquium – einer neuen, jährlich stattfindenden mathematischen Vortragsreihe für Wissenschaft, Studierende und alle Mathematik-Interessierten.

In diesem Jahr freuen wir uns Prof. Dr. Barbara Niethammer (Universität Bonn) begrüßen zu dürfen, die einen Vortrag halten wird zum Thema

„Gelation, self-similarity and oscillations in the classical coagulation equations“.

Abstract: Coagulation equations, derived first by Smoluchowski in 1916, are flexible models which allow to describe mass aggregation phenomena in a large variety of applications. Classical areas are aersol physics or polymerization, but more recently coagulation equations have been also used in mathematical biology, medicine or ecnonomics. I will give an overview of the basic properties of this model, explain some of the main challenges in its analysis and report on recent progress. We will see that, despite rather simple looking, solutions to this model exhibit very rich phenomena. This inludes gelation, that is the creation of gigantic clusters and a corresponding loss of mass in finite time, or the development of oscillatory behaviour. (Based on joint work with Marco Bonacini, Michael Herrman and Juan J.L.
