HOUSE, A SEAT
Impromptu Design Project (Stegreif)
Summer 2026
This year marks the 60th anniversary of a publication that profoundly had challenged the architectural discourse: Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966) by Robert Venturi. With provocative nonchalance, this manifesto liberated the discipline from the rigid constraints of modernism, paving the way for humour, ambiguity, and historical references. In honour of this ground-braking writing and as a tribute to the work the architectural practice of Robert Venturi, John Rauch, and Denise Scott Brown, this Stegreif is dedicated to the playful translation of their architecture.
We would ask you to undertake a shift in perspective:
The task of the Stegreif is to capture the essence and spatial articulation of a specific postmodern building by Venturi, Rauch & Scott Brown and translate it into a seating object.
