Why should I pursue a master's degree in computer science?

Vocational training in a company, a dual study programme at a university of applied sciences, a Bachelor's or Master's degree at a university - there are many ways to become a computer scientist.

With the Master's programme in Computer Science, you will build on your broad-based Bachelor's degree and have the opportunity to delve deeper into topics of your choice. As a Master's graduate, all doors are open to you in teaching, research and the professional world.

What is special about TU Braunschweig?

In the early 1970s, we were one of the first independent computer science programmes in Germany. Since then, we have continued to develop, and we can now offer you a state-of-the-art computer science centre that brings all our institutes together under one roof. This means short distances, direct contact with your lecturers and modern facilities with well-equipped computer workstations and lecture rooms.

With us, you are more than just a number in the system. Computer science studies in Braunschweig are characterised by close supervision between students and lecturers. The Department of Computer Science offers a wide variety of sub-areas, including computer graphics, IT security, medical informatics and robotics. As we are actively shaping current trends, we introduced our own professorship for artificial intelligence in 2024.

Design according to your own interests

The Master's programme in Computer Science at TU Braunschweig offers you a variety of options.

One of our specialisations allows you to delve deeper into a specific subject area, while choosing an interdisciplinary elective allows you to integrate modules from other subjects into your studies beyond the horizons of computer science. Our Master's programme offers you maximum flexibility: you can choose both, one or none of these options. You can design your studies entirely according to your own ideas.

Field of study

The compulsory elective area of computer science offers a wide range of different topics in computer science. Within this compulsory elective area, we have defined a set of modules for each field of study that you can choose from to deepen your knowledge in a specific subject area. If you wish, you can also have your chosen field of study indicated on your Master's certificate. A list of the currently defined fields of study can be found here.

Interdisciplinary elective area

If you would like to take modules beyond the field of computer science, you can choose one of our interdisciplinary elective areas. Here you will complete 14-18 LP in one of the following subjects. You can also choose the mathematics elective area, in which you can earn up to 15 LP. The current module offerings in the respective areas can be found in the examination regulations.

Practical relevance and research

Modern computer scientists work in agile teams. To prepare you for this, you will develop essential analysis and communication skills through internships and project work. TU Braunschweig's location in one of Europe's most research-intensive regions, with its large research facilities and numerous industrial companies, adds to the practical nature of the programme. Use these contacts as a springboard for your career after graduation.

The Master's degree qualifies you to pursue a doctorate in any field of computer science. Through project work and final theses, you can develop expertise in a specific area and establish contact with potential doctoral supervisors. Feel free to talk to your professors about this early on!

Studying together

You will not study computer science in Braunschweig alone. You will receive advice and support from both the Department of Computer Science and the Carl Friedrich Gauss Faculty and can take advantage of our services as needed.

Right at the beginning of your studies, you will be assigned a professor to mentor you. They will be available to answer any questions you have about your studies. The Computer Science Department organises orientation week in the first semester and is always available to address your concerns. It also represents student interests in university committees.

In addition, you can arrange confidential appointments with staff from the degree programme coordination office or the examination office.

Nowadays, both research and business operate on a global scale. People with international experience and foreign language skills are in high demand in both sectors. Thanks to its flexibility, the Master's programme in Computer Science allows you to easily incorporate time abroad into your studies. You can also take interdisciplinary courses in intercultural competence or various foreign languages to develop your key qualifications.

By completing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related programme, you have demonstrated your ability to think logically and analytically, as well as your knowledge of the fundamentals of computer science. You should also be willing to collaborate with others and be interested in engaging with ways of thinking from other disciplines, as teamwork and cross-disciplinary collaboration are common in professional life.

English skills are also becoming increasingly important, as international specialist literature is almost exclusively published in English. While no one should be prevented from studying computer science due to a lack of English skills, you should be prepared to improve your language proficiency during your studies, for example by taking courses offered by our TU Language Centre.
