Job description
The aim of this project is to develop a new aerodynamic topology optimization technique for external flow problems. Using this new technique, the topology of aircraft airfoils and wings can be optimized to achieve the highest aircraft performance. In particular, this project is going to investigate the implementation of topology optimization to design high lift devices for aircraft wing. A single element airfoil and a multi-element airfoil are different in topology so the available aerodynamic shape optimization techniques cannot change a single element airfoil into a multi-element one during the optimization to find e.g. the optimum number of elements. This research is going to solve this problem by developing an aerodynamic topology optimization technique. In the first step the new technique is applied to find the optimum topology of a high lift airfoil and then it will be applied to find the optimum topology of a high lift three-dimensional wing. A state of the art finite element CFD code needs to be developed to be used for topology optimization.

Requirements
• A Master of Science degree in the area of aerospace engineering (aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics) or computer science, or applied mathematics.
• Strong mathematical, analytical and programming skills.
• Interest in mathematical modelling.
• Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics
• Knowledge of engineering optimization
• Knowledge of aircraft design
• Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English.
• Creativity, positive attitude, and perseverance.
