Professor (W2) in Theoretical physics: condensed matter

The Department of Elektrotechnik, Informationstechnik, Physik is seeking to

appoint a

Professor (W2) in Theoretical physics: condensed matter
to start on summer semester 2018

We invite applications from researchers with an outstanding track record on the foundations of quantum many particle physics. The focus should be on quantum phenomena in interacting emergent, collective or artificial nanoscale many particle systems. This includes novel quantum phases and types of order, elementary excitations, quantum transport, non-equilibrium and open systems of quantum matter, comprising charge, spin or photonic degrees of freedom. Conceivable methodical expertise may include in particular novel approaches from areas of quantum-dynamics and –information, or topology, but also large-scale numerical techniques (e.g. QMC, (t-)TDMRG, tensor networks).

Teaching on this position will represent the theoretical physics curriculum in its full range.

We seek to establish a structurally sustainable expansion of focusses in theoretical physics of condensed matter and in mathematical physics already established on-site. We expect participation in „QuanoMet”, a network to strengthen scientific excellence of the two university locations Braunschweig and Hannover in the areas of quantum physics and metrology. Desirable is also participation in one or several of the activities: „Braunschweig International Graduate School of Metrology”, research training group 1952/1 “Metrology for complex nanosystems”, graduate school “School for Contacts in Nanosystems : Interactions, Control and Quantum Dynamics ", “TU Braunschweig research center LENA (Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology)”, as well as collaboration with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig.

The requirements of the position are defined in Section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz). The academic community at Technische Universität (TU) Braunschweig, founded in 1745, comprises 20,500 students and 3,500 staff. Engineers and natural scientists collaborate closely with economists, social and educational scientists, and the humanities. TU Braunschweig is committed to strategic and achievement-oriented thinking, good teaching, strong links at many levels with partners in industry, science and society, and close international cooperation. Home to more than 20 renowned research institutes and facilities, Braunschweig is one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions, and an attractive location for scientists and their families. At TU Braunschweig, we aim to increase the share of women in academic positions and therefore particularly welcome applications from women. Where candidates have equivalent qualifications, preference will be given to female candidates. Applications from international scientists are welcome. A part-time appointment may be possible on request. Applicants who are 50 years or older at the time the appointment commences and who have not acquired permanent civil servant status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit) will be employed with employee status (Angestelltenverhältnis). Where candidates have the same qualifications, preference will be given to disabled candidates.

For more information, please contact the chair of the Appointments Committee, Prof. Dr. Meinhard Schilling, Tel. +49 (0) 531 391-3866. Please submit your written application to the Dean of the Department of Elektrotechnik, Informationstechnik, Physik, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kurrat, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Hans-Sommer-Str. 66, 38106 Braunschweig, to arrive by 30.05.2017.
