The research line "Mobilise" meets the challenges of mobility in the focus areas of "Digitization", "Energy Transformation in Aviation", and "Production and Lightweight Structures". The long-term cooperation ensures that existing research competencies at the Technische Universität Braunschweig (TUBS) and the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) are developed and connected in a complementary manner. As these challenges of future mobility are already being addressed by various research activities and research centers, a major objective of the structural and scientific development is to bundle the activities and to increase their visibility in national and international context. Within the focus areas, research will focus on challenges and technological developments across individual modes of transport (road vehicle and aircraft).

focus area Digitization

The focus area of "Digitization" deals mainly with the topics "connected driving and system security", "mobile humans" and "multimodal transport systems". The objective of the thematic area "connected driving and system security" is an enhanced networking of the entire transport system, i.e. the exchange of information in between mobility carriers as well as between mobility users, mobility carriers and mobility infrastructure. The field of "mobile humans" focuses on humans as mobility users. Aspects of automated driving, intermodality, intelligent networking (big data, car-to-car communication), and the security of vehicles and mobility systems are addressed. The aim of "multimodal transport systems" is to satisfy mobility needs and increase overall transport efficiency through a cross-mobility carrier approach and design.

focus area Energy Transformation in Aviation

The focus area "Energy Transformation in Aviation" addresses the following topics: "assessment and evaluation of the overall transport system", "flight physics and propulsion", "hybrid engines, energy storage scenarios and engines" as well as "structure and design". The aim of the subject area "assessment and evaluation of the overall transport system" is to develop on a solid scientific foundation tools and models for scenario-based simulation and optimization. These tools/models shall be used for problem analysis and the derivation of recommendations for the design and operation of aviation systems. In addition to the aspect of pollutant emissions, the reduction of noise emissions is also addressed in order to achieve social acceptance. In the field of "flight physics and propulsion", approaches for decoupling propulsors and power generation (concepts of distributed engines), propulsor with variable cycles in the meaning of operating point adjustment, active flow control, synthetically produced sustainable fuels, drag reductions through laminarization and loss reduction in the fuselage and wing area are investigated. The field of "hybrid engines, storage scenarios and engines" deals with the fundamental consideration of future primary energy scenarios and their transformation processes. Modularization concepts of possible hybrid engine setups as well as regenerative concepts under consideration of corresponding storage scenarios are considered. In this context, storage materials can be liquid gas and synthetic regenerative high-performance fuels from sustainable and regenerative sources, solid electrolyte battery cells as electrical storage devices with high power and exergy density at low specific weight, and increased safety or low-temperature fuel cells. With regard to the overall system, the field of "structure and design" considers new structural concepts for future energy storage and hybrid engine concepts. The weight disadvantage to be expected in the electrified system must be compensated by new lightweight designs. Transition and long life cycles require structures that can be modified, which must be developed using adapted simulation processes and new manufacturing technologies.

focus area Production and Lightweight

The focus area "Production and Lightweight Structures" deals with the topics "automotive and mass-produced lightweight structure" as well as "production and process chains for hybrid lightweight structure". The aim of the "automotive and mass-produced lightweight structure" field is to significantly reduce the energy and resource consumption of future mobility concepts. This requires conceptual solutions for product development in the automotive sector on the one hand, but also within the manufacturing chains of the products on the other hand. With regard to the production chain, process combinations must be researched and developed for better technological utilization of existing production methods. Studies in the field of "production and process chains for hybrid lightweight structure" focus on evaluation methods for the production and process chain design of hybrid components. These include the boundary surfaces between the various materials. Furthermore, there is a need for research in the macroscopic evaluation of the manufacturing processes of hybrid components. These include in particular possibilities that take into account the technological, economic and ecological research questions of a production chain and the overall product life cycle of hybrid components.
