EU-funded ChipScope Project Gets Leading Companies on Board

The ChipScope project aims to develop a completely new and extremely small optical microscope capable of observing the interior of living cells in real time. The new microscope will be affordable and ubiquitously available.

Two international players in the field of imaging and microscopy, Nikon and Carl Zeiss GmbH, have joined the Industrial Advisory Board of the European funded research project ChipScope.

Indonesian scientists visiting LENA
Lightweight and versatile nanosensors and the fundamentals of their research and development are the focus of an intensive course of the Indonesian-German Center for Nano and Quantum Technologies (IG-Nano) in Braunschweig. Antragsskizze QuantumFrontiers: Für die Endrunde der Exzellenzstrategie ausgewählt
Das gemeinsame Forschungsvorhaben „Quantum Frontiers“ der Wissenschaftsallianz Hannover-Braunschweig hat erfolgreich die erste Runde der gemeinsamen Exzellenzinitiative von Bund und Ländern absolviert. Das Vorhaben wird nun zu einem Vollantrag aufgefordert und hat Aussicht als Exzellenzcluster Spitzenforschung auf internationalem Niveau betreiben. Ausgewählt wurden 88 aus insgesamt 195 Antragsskizzen von 63 Hochschulen. Über die Einrichtung der deutschlandweit insgesamt 45 bis 50 Exzellenzclustern wird im September 2018 entschieden.

Publication: Plasmonics Enhanced Smartphone Fluorescence Microscopy
Smartphone fluorescence microscopy has various applications in point-of-care (POC) testing and diagnostics. An important need in smartphone-based microscopy and sensing techniques is to improve the detection sensitivity. Here, the latest Open Access publication by Dr. Acuna, Prof. Tinnefeld and partners from the University of California demonstrates a general strategy to enhance the detection sensitivity of a smartphone-based fluorescence microscope by using surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) created by a thin metal-film.

Microchips replacing microscopes
Start-up project Superlight Photonics plans to make it big with tiny LEDs: In terms of location, Superlight Photonics is already at the top: its office is on the 14th (and top) floor of the TU tower block on Hans-Sommer-Straße. From here, the six researchers plan to take over the nano world, not only scientifically but also commercially speaking. The centrepiece of their technology: nanometre-sized blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) made of gallium nitride.

The light tamer
Portrait Prof. Dr. Stefanie Kroker | Stefanie Kroker was a little surprised when she received the job offer. It was only her first job application after earning a doctorate in physics. “But I was very happy that it worked out right away”, she proclaims. Since April 2016, the 32-year-old junior professor has been leading the Metrology for Functional Nanosystems junior research group at LENA, the joint research centre of TU Braunschweig and the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB).

Challenging European Research Project to Develop New Tiny Microscopes

The Institute of Semiconductor Technology (Waag Lab) and the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry (Tinnefeld Lab) both members of the Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology (LENA) at Technische Universität Braunschweig are partners in a new European research project entitled ChipScope, which aims to develop a completely new and extremely small optical microscope capable of observing the interior of living cells in real time. A consortium of 7 partners from 5 countries will tackle this issue with very ambitious objectives during a four-year research program.

To demonstrate the usefulness of this new scientific tool, at the end of the project the developed chip-sized microscope will be used to observe in real-time the interior of cells present in a disease called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a chronic age-related lung disease killing 0.5 Million people each year worldwide.

Publication: Mirage effect induced by optical antennas at the nanoscale

During the last decade, scientists have focused on the study of antennas which are approximately a billion times smaller than the typical antenna sticking out of our bathroom radio. These antennas are based on metallic nanostructures of different materials (such as for example gold) and different shapes (such as for example spheres). Furthermore, these antennas can also act as receivers and emitters of electromagnetic radiation but at much shorter wavelengths, in the sub-micrometer range covering the optical spectrum. These optical antennas are of great interest to control light at the nanoscale beyond common optical resolution.

Scientists at TU-Braunschweig directed by Prof. Philip Tinnefeld and junior research group leader Dr. Guillermo Acuna (Institute for Physical Chemistry, Laboratory of Emerging Nanometrology) have performed novel contributions to the understanding of these optical antennas. To this end, they have employed the so-called DNA origami technique to place gold spherical nanoparticles next to fluorescent molecules.

What is B-IGSM?

Metrology – the science of correct measurement – is an essential cornerstone of our industrialized society which is based on the division of labour. Metrology has an impact on practically every aspect of our lives, and metrological progress is a key enabler for technical development and, thus, for innovation. Given the prevailing economic and social challenges we are faced with, the role and the further development of metrology is of extraordinary importance for progress in technology and science.

Germany’s oldest and renowned technical university, TU Braunschweig, and one of the top measurement institutions in the world, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, joined forces to establish an international metrological training center – Braunschweig International Graduate School of Metrology – to foster metrological knowledge in all areas of science and engineering. Our research fields are in particular Metrology for Society, Industrial Metrology and Fundamentals of Metrology.  

 

What does B-IGSM offer?

B-IGSM offers a structured doctorate in cutting edge research combined with a metrological qualification program where a metrological certificate can be earned.  The graduate school supports its PhD students in acquiring key competences in metrology by offering a curriculum on metrological concepts and research as well as on structures of metrology and regulatory activities.

The curriculum is supplemented by seminars, topical courses e.g., on scientific writing and international summer schools. Scientists of TU Braunschweig and PTB team up to serve as advisors of B-IGSM’s PhD researchers.

Studying successfully at B-IGSM will qualify you for both an academic as well as an industrial career. You will be supported with an individually developed career plan and enabled to develop and strengthen key competences for your future professional career.

Joint trips to the famous Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover or traditional Christmas markets will offer a cultural experience that we are sure you will remember for the rest of your life.

Research

Metrology is a horizontal scientific-technical field which underpins nearly all fields in natural sciences and engineering. Even with regard to very specialized scientific or technical applications, metrology addresses common aspects that are relevant across all disciplines and are consequently part of the mandatory training at B-IGSM: the International System of Base and Derived Units (SI) and the science behind it, metrology core concepts, e.g., as regards quality assurance and scientific treatment of measurement uncertainties, methods of metrology and instrumentation, but also international metrological structures and organizations.

 

The PhD projects of the student members fall into one of the three focal areas of B-IGSM: Fundamentals of Metrology, Industrial Metrology and Metrology for Society.

Fundamentals of Metrology consists of the three pillars Quantum Metrology, Applied Metrology and Metrology in Life Sciences. It comprises all fundamental research aspects related to the implementation and dissemination of the units, as well as research to foster scientific advancements.

Efforts in Quantum Metrology aim among others at utilizing quantum effects and universal physical constants to implement next-generation primary standards.

Applied metrology covers major needs of the subject fields of physics and chemistry when ensuring traceability of measurements and developing new standards and measurement techniques.

The pillar Metrology in Life Sciences addresses the need for reliable chemical measurements in many fields of everyday life and requests from global trade and national as well as international legislation. It focuses on primary methods such as mass spectrometry, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging.

 

 

Industrial Metrology covers the pillars Metrology for Production, Metrological Instrumentation and Nanometrology and is aimed at innovative concepts for measurement capabilities to address demands of industry and trade. It includes topics such as in-line metrology, production engineering and new technologies such as nanotechnology and biotechnology.

The Metrology for Production pillar covers, for example, the development and integration of (miniaturized) sensors for in-line metrology and traceability under production conditions. Nowadays, measurements are generally performed under dynamic conditions and often by deployment of automated systems. Traditional areas of industry are becoming more complex and are requiring broader measurement ranges and lower uncertainties. This results in a demand for increasingly complex measurement configurations which allow mechanical multi-component measurements. Their realization and characterization are strong drivers for industrial metrology.Metrological instrumentation includes the exploration of optical, electrical and magnetic properties of materials and structures relevant to metrological instrumentation devices and new sensor concepts, e.g., for magnetic fields, and metrology related to THz technology.The driving forces behind nanotechnology are, e.g., the demand for ever increasing integration of systems and miniaturization as well as the possibility of achieving new functionalities which are not possible otherwise such as through nanostructured surfaces, photonic crystals, optical meta-materials, and nanoparticles. Hence, the pillar Nanometrology focuses on traceable dimensional metrology with nanometer and subnanometer resolution and quantitative determination of the topological and functional properties of nanostructured or nanosized materials and systems, in particular nanooptics and nanomagnetics.

 

 

Metrology for Society comprises multidisciplinary metrology research needed to meet key socioeconomic objectives for the pillars Energy, Environment, Health and Mobility. Quality-assured measurements, with traceability to international standards and with quoted uncertainty, provide an objective base for decision-making and implementation as well as monitoring of regulations and directives.The pillar Energy focuses on research which supports steps towards a sustainable and secured energy system as well as affordable energy and efficient energy use. The complete energy chain from generation to storage and consumption of energy is covered.

Research dedicated to the protection of the environment and to the development of new sustainable technologies is covered by the pillar Environment.The pillar Health comprises topics which aim at a more reliable and efficient exploitation of diagnostic and therapeutic methods, but also the development and deployment of new technologies.Mobility is a key requirement for a society. To overcome barriers for the implementation of innovative and ambitious transport concepts and to support the introduction of alternatives to vehicles operating on classic consumption are key aspects of the pillar Mobility.

Metrology at the frontiers of measurement technology requires a strong theoretical and mathematical background and support. Thus, a small number of dedicated theoretical doctoral theses will be completed in close cooperation with experimental work.
