Analyses of compost quality and nutrient contents on pre-treated waste of ISKA® Percolation Facility, Buchen

 

The ISKA® pre-treatment process with percolation was realized in full-scale as a demonstration facility at the landfill Sansenhecken in Buchen (Neckar-Odenwaldkreis, Germany) with a treatment capacity of 25.000 Mg/a. This facility is currently extended for a treatment capacity of 150.000 Mg/a. A further treatment facility in Heilbronn, Germany, is being constructed with a throughput of 60.000 Mg/a. At the end of 2004, a plant in Sydney, Australia, will go on line treating approx. 150.000 Mg/a and being operated by Global Renewables Ltd. At this facility the treatment goal consists in the production of high quality composts.

In order to evaluate the achievable quality of the percolated waste and assess changes in quality due to the percolation process, Leichtweiss-Institute, Departemnet of waste Management, realized a series of studies on compost quality and nutrient contents based on the on-going scientific monitoring of ISAK® treatment facility in Buchen:

  • Analyses of heavy metal content in all in- and output materials including balancing
  • Analyses of nutrients in all in- and output materials including balancing

  • Evaluation of visual and sensory quality of the percolated waste and waste after post-treatment

The analyses were realized in 2004 results and are documented in 3 reports.
