Scientific monitoring of open disposal facility for MBT-material at Blankenhagen and Hattorf landfills

Location: Hattorf and Blankenhagen landfills, Lower Saxony, Germany

Aim:

After the MBT plant Göttingen has been damaged currently only the plant’s mechanical treatment can be completed for the waste of the districts Osterode, Northeim, and Göttingen. The waste’s stabilization according to Landfill Ordinance (AbfAblV) is proceeded with aerated compost windrows meanwhile. These windrows are set up on landfill sites in Hattorf and Blankenhagen. For emission reduction the entire windrow surface is covered with a special membrane (helsasorb eco) manufactured by Helsatech. Compost duration is assumed to be 12 to 14 weeks per windrow. Within this time turning windrows is going to be done once or twice and is monitored by TU Braunschweig. In this context extensive temperature measurements are executed for monitoring composting processes, and to determine the degradation level the waste is sampled in defined time intervals. With a subproject the special cover system’s efficiency is going to be evaluated by emission measurements.
