JInGEL - Joint Indo-German Experience Lab

The engineering education in Indian universities has a huge potential in combining scientific theoretical education with practical experience. To ease the transition of graduates into the job market it is advisable to have practical education with industrial context in universities. Especially in reference to management and performing abilities in realistic manufacturing environments, shortcomings in university education have to be compensated. The goal of this project is to adapt the experiences of engineering education of the Experience Lab at TU Braunschweig (TU-BS) to the Indian university environment. As reference project the concept will be introduced at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in Pilani, India. Together with the German company Festo Didactic who is supplying the educational infrastructure a cooperation is established.

The University BITS is currently ranked first among private Indian engineering universities (Higher Education Review 2015). The BITS just invested in the construction of a new workshop building to create a suitable environment for practical education, furthermore new practical education equipment will be acquired. To implement these investments into a sustainable educating-learning concept the experiences of TU-BS and Festo will be merged. Festo Didactic is manufacturing learning-systems for the practical education. In a bilateral project with TU-BS these systems were already enabled and evaluated for university education.

The Indian and the German society are challenged by the necessity of a sustainable development. Overcoming these challenges requires respectively educated professionals. Engineers not only participate in the development of such solutions but also in the process of the practical implementation. An education with practical orientation strengthens the economic potential of the regions and benefits directly the social and ecological structures. On the same note the emigration of highly trained and educated people from these regions is reduced.
