Glycerin II

To cool and lubricate the contact zone of metal working processes as well as to remove the chips from the workzone cutting fluids are applied. The use of cutting fluids has a positive impact on tool wear and surface quality. This leads to a more efficient and effective production process. Nevertheless, increasing technological, economic and ecological requirements result in higher requirements of the used cutting fluid formulations. Therefore, cutting fluids are an essential part of heavy duty cutting. The gained productivity and quality is a result of the used cutting fluid formulation.

The objective of this project is to investigate and develop a new cutting fluid based on glycerol for cutting different metals with geometrically defined and undefined cutting edge in industrial use.

Scope of this work is the technological and ecological evaluation of a newly developed cutting fluid compared to conventional fluids based on mineral oil. Apart from the use of investigations in laboratory scale, the cutting fluid will also be used in real cutting experiments in the workshop of the IWF. As production and application location Germany has been selected.
