DaLion – Data-Mining in the production of lithium-ion battery cells


Compared to other technologies with a high degree of technological maturity, battery cell production has considerable potential to increase productivity and to improve product quality. Product and process innovations are needed for the production of electrodes and the design of cells. It is important to improve the quality, to reduce the reject rate, and reduce produciton cost and energy requirements.


The goal of the project is to systematically acquire knowledge about the interactions within the production of lithium-ion battery cells. It is intended to improve the battery production as a whole by identifying and controling cause-effect relationships between machinery, process parameters, technical building services, materials, and other influencing factors. This enables the derivation of adapted product designs and production strategies.


In DaLion, a feedback process will be created that systemically identified the important parameters, recordes and  documents data of the online characterization in various stages of production through methods of data mining and stores the results to an expert system. The expert system enables the systematic identification of product and process characteristics along with material and energy flows in the production system.
