BenchBatt – Benchmarking and Evaluation of Performance and Costs of High Energy and Voltage Lithium Ion Batteries compared to Post Lithium Battery Technologies

Context

The quest for battery technology with significantly higher energy contents (specific energy or energy density) is still open. This requires the evaluation of novel batteries. The project intends to address important questions such as the future competitiveness of traction batteries regarding specific (Wh / kg) and volumetric (Wh / L) energy as well as costs and perspective material availability of realizable PLIBs.

Objective

As the energy content of LIB technologies continuously increase, it is reasonable to ask whether Post-LIB could reach the same or better performance. The project BenchBatt aims at systematically research to which extent current commercial battery technologies could be optimized. These optimized LIB will be then theoretically and, if possible, experimentally compared to the so called post-LIB battery technologies. In Summary, the objective of the project is to give a theoretical assessment of HE-LIB and Post-LIB (Li/S, Li/O2, Na-Ion, solid electrolyte) on a material, process, cell and system perspective. This evaluation will be done in terms of energy density, costs and use of resources.  

Methodological Approach

As part of the cost analysis, the IWF is developing a tool for the analysis of life cycle costs (LCC) and Total cost of Ownership (TCO) of LIBs and PLIBs.
