Doctorate / PHD at TU Braunschweig

Entry Requirements

A doctorate is possible in all fields of studies offered at TU Braunschweig.

Academic Requirements

  • A good or excellent university degree at Masters level: This implies at least 5 years of university studies, completed with a final project or a written thesis.
  • The recognition of your foreign degree by TU Braunschweig

Language Requirements

If you apply for a doctoral degree you do not necessarily have to pass a German language test. You should clarify with your department or supervisor, which language requirements you must fulfill and what German proficiency level is being demanded what language will be used in your dissertation.

Recognition of foreign degrees

TU Braunschweig accepts a wide range of international qualifications, if they are considered to be equivalent to the German Master, Diplom or Magister degree. Once you have found a supervisor, please send us your foreign degrees for the recognition process according to the guidelines of the Standing Conference.

Please send us the following documents:

  • Bachelor´s certificate and all transcripts
    in original language and in German or English translation
  • Master´s certificate and all transcripts
    in original language and in German or English translation
  • Please send all documents as PDF files to more@tu-braunschweig.de

We will then let you know whether your qualification will be recognized.

Please note that in some cases, we will have to contact the Standing Conference in written form and that in this case the procedure can take up to eight weeks.

Application Procedure for Enrolment

1. Choosing a research field

To find a professor, who will supervise your work, you first need a detailed idea of the area or the subject you wish to research. Next you can find out in which institute at the TU Braunschweig this work would be possible. More information about the institutes and their research areas can be found here:

2. Finding an academic supervisor for your dissertation (Doktorvater / Doktormutter)

  • Submit a draft outline of your proposed area of studies and your vita to the institute or professor who is working in your chosen research field.
  • If you are offered a place, your supervisor may accept your individual project proposal or will propose an other specific topic.

3. Application

If you have found an academic supervisor and your foreign degree has been recognized by TU Braunschweig, please send your complete application documents to the International Office:

  • Online application
  • Certified copies and translations of your university certificates (Bachelor´s and Master´s certificates and all transcripts in original language and English or German translation)
  • Topic of your doctoral thesis
  • Declaration from your supervisor at the TU Braunschweig
  • Certificate of German or English language proficiency (or exemption from supervisor)
  • CV
  • Letter of scholarship award (if applicable)
  • Certificate of exmatriculation (if you have already been enrolled as a PhD student at a German university before)
  • passport size photo

The processing time for applications submitted to the International Office is ca. 8 weeks from submission of the application. Once we have processed your application we will send you a letter of acceptance with all the further steps.
