First Steps

After your arrival, please follow these steps:


Enrolment at Orientation Meeting

Please come and see us at the Orientation Meeting.
The meetings will be announced here, they take place before semester is starting.

At our Orientation Meeting, we will enrol you and give you all important information you need to know about your exchange period at TU Braunschweig.

Please provide the following documents for enrolment:

  • admission letter with data sheet
  • passport or identity card
  • German health insurance card or certificate of a German statutory health insurance for students
  • signed information sheet of liability insurance
  • bank receipt proving the payment of your semester fees
  • pass foto

If you provide all needed documents we will enrol you at the Orientation Meeting. You will be issued immediately with your provisional student identification card which entitles you to use all busses and tramways in the Braunschweig region free of charge.

How to take out German health insurance:

Go to a public health insurance provider where you can either take out a German statutory health insurance for students or check whether your policy issued by a provider in your home country complies with German standards. You will then receive a certificate of insurance which you must present at the time of enrolment:

How to take out liability insurance:

Go to a local insurance company and take out liability insurance or check whether your policy issued by a provider in your home country complies with German standards.

How to pay your semester fees:

You can either transfer your semester fees from your bank account or pay it in cash at a local bank. The processing charge for cash payments is € 15. Payment information can be found on your Letter of Acceptance (Zulassungsbescheid). The bank receipt must be presented upon enrolment. Please make sure, the receipt is issued and stamped by the bank, a simple copy will not be accepted as proof of payment.

Registration with city of Braunschweig and immigration office

For your stay in Braunschweig you have to register at the city of Braunschweig. Students coming outside from EU also need to hold an official residence permit.
We recommend to keep the appointments with registration office and immigration office together with your "Buddy".

All exchange students need to register with the city of Braunschweig.

You can visit registration office without an appointment taking a ticket and wait or make an appointment.

Residence permit

Students coming outside from EU additionally need to apply for an official residence permit.

Please visit immigration office and take the following documents:

  • Antrag (application)
  • passport
  • passport photo
  • proof of financial resources (scholarship certificate)
  • tenancy agreement
  • proof of sufficient insurance cover
  • (provisional) confirmation of enrollmentor acceptance paper of university
  • In some cases immigration office will give you special information about further needed documents

Opening a bank account

As soon as you are enrolled at TU Braunschweig and have received your student ID, you can open a bank account at one of the local banks. Most banks offer special student accounts, which are free of charge.

The following banks have branches in the immediate campus vicinity:

To set up your bank account, please take the following documents with you:

  • passport or identity card
  • residents’ registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung der Stadt Braunschweig)
  • (provisional) student ID


Registration for your courses and with your faculty
  1. Contact your programme coordinator at TU Braunschweig and register with your faculty. The name and contact details of your coordinator can be found in your Letter of Acceptance (Zulassungsbescheid).
  2. Discuss your timetable with your programme coordinator and compare it with your previous Learning Agreement. Your programme coordinator will explain you how to register for your chosen lectures and seminars. You may need to change some courses because these are already full. In this case, compile a modified Learning Agreement with your programme coordinator and submit it to the International Office. We will forward it to your home university.

Information on all courses can be found in the course catalogue (Vorlesungsverzeichnis).

Many faculties and departments organise introductory events in the week before the semester begins. You should definitely attend these sessions. They are an opportunity for you to get an insight into your chosen subject and get to know your professors, tutors and fellow students.



Registration with university facilities

The next step is to register for the various university facilities. Once again, the best time to do this is before you begin your studies. Many of the university facilities organise introductory events at the beginning of the semester.

TUcard - your electronic student ID

You receive your temporary student ID at the enrolment appointment. This temporary student ID is valid until your TUcard is ready for pick up. You can pick up your TUcard around two weeks after enrolment at our Study Service Center.

The TUcard includes the following functions:

  • Study card
  • Semester ticket
  • Library card
  • Mensa card
  • Payment card for your printing account
  • Identification for university and student body elections.

To use the University Library, newly matriculated students will first need to register online and then at the circulation desk.

Validate your TUcard

The validation of the TUcard has to be done manually once it is issued and again at the beginning of each new semester. This process encodes your current data on the card’s thermal sensitive foil via a validation printer.

How to use the IT centre:

You will be given your user ID (y-number) approx. 1 week after enrolment. With this user account, you have access to all IT services offered by the Gauss IT centre. If you have any questions, these will be answered by the IT service desk. In addition, a number of introductory courses and software trainings are organised.

How to sign up for a German language course:

The language centre (Sprachenzentrum) provides German language courses on all levels. They cover a broad variety of student requirements, e.g. conversational German, scientific terminology, spoken presentations and the writing of academic texts. The courses are free of charge for exchange students.

  • To attend a German course, register in person at the Language Centre.
  • You can immediately take a test to assess your existing level of ability.
  • Then arrange a meeting with a member of the Language Centre to agree on a suitable German course.
Please do not delay, as assessment tests must generally be completed before the start of the semester or during the first week.
