Operational practice and rules

The situation of today’s railway control and safety technology can only be explained historically. The general principles for securing railway operations evolved in the late 19th century and basically still remain in use today. Further development was mostly influenced by new interlocking technology only.

In the 1990s, high grade centralization started to essentially replace existing structures. The successful continuation of this process requires that as well as the technical conversion, traditional operation practices and rules need to be adapted to the new ancillary conditions.
