Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF)

As an interdisciplinary center, the NFF was founded in 2007 with the support of the state government of Lower Saxony and Volkswagen AG in order to establish the research region Braunschweig as a top location in vehicle technology with international rank. The result was an effective cooperation platform for joint research of industry and science with locations at the MobileLifeCampus in Wolfsburg and at the research airport in Braunschweig.

Sustainable Mobility

From the existing social, environmental and economic requirements for the development of vehicle-related technologies and usage models, the NFF has developed the vision of Sustainable Mobility. It will be implemented in five scientific research fields (Intelligent Vehicle and Connected Driving, Low-Emission Vehicle, Flexible Vehicle Concepts and Vehicle Production, Mobility Management and Logistics, Electromobility) and will sustainably ensure the individual mobility needs in metropolitan areas.

Interdisciplinary Cooperation

The implementation of this research vision requires a broad and structurally anchored interdisciplinary cooperation of natural and engineering sciences as well as economics and social sciences.
The NFF bundles the research activities around mobility in Lower Saxony. Currently, 21 professors from the universities of Braunschweig, Hanover and Clausthal as well as the German Aerospace Center are full members of the NFF.
In addition there are about 21 associated members, part of which belongs to other research institutions in the region, such as the Ostfalia, The Braunschweig University of Art, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and Wolfsburg AG.
Research is conducted in the field of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, chemistry, psychology, social sciences, civil engineering and economics. The NFF focuses on future-oriented topics in vehicle and traffic engineering research, which are handled in interdisciplinary research teams.
