ElektroBak - Materials and concepts for microbial electrochemical systems

Bioelectrochemical systems such as microbial fuel cells are a new, innovative and promising technology that aims at the energetic development of the so far technically hardly usable ingredients of waste water. By using electrochemically (Elektro) active bacteria (Bak) the purification of wastewater should be converted from an energy-consuming to an energy-generating process. Additionally to the energetic and environmental technology of bioelectrochemical systems, e.g. the generation of hydrogen in microbial electrolysis cells as well as microbial electrosynthesis have a high application potential.

The aim of our NTH research group "ElektroBak" is the development of microbial electrochemical systems. To this end, three working groups of the Leibniz University of Hannover (LUH), two working groups of the TU Clausthal (TUC) and five project groups of the TU Braunschweig (TUBS) generate basics in an interdisciplinary approach including electrode, reactor and process development.
