TU BRAUNSCHWEIG

Biology in Braunschweig

Biozentrum der TU-Braunschweig

Enormous proceedings in medicine or plant breeding were enabled by improvements in molecular- and cell biology. These are research fields with high potential for future investigations. With focus on molecular and cell biology, the TU-Braunschweig offers the specification which is necessary for a career in science or industry.

During the studies of biology the TU Braunschweig offers a variety of theoretical courses and practical experience in all aspects of classical and modern biology. Investigation of organisms down to their lowest cellular structures with latest technology to map the functions is part of the education programm. In addition to fundamental knowledge in biological and pathologic processes an important part of the academic studies is the transfer of theoretical skills to every day research work.

Good reasons for Braunschweig - High performance research environment

The Technical University of Braunschweig, the oldest technical university in Germany is located in one of the largest research sites in Europe. Close cooperations with the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, the Julius Kühn-Institute (Federal Research Center for Cultivated Plants), the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Insitute (Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries) and the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures.

The biological and biotechnological research

The biological and biotechnological research of the instituts of biochemistry and biotechnology, genetics, microbiology, plant biology and zoology is focusses in the Department of life sciences. There is also a large number of cooperation, both across disciplines, as well as with other national and international working groups.

There is also a close cooperation with residents of Brunswick major research institutions such as the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, the Julius Kühn-Institut (Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants), the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut (Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries) and the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures closely. Furthermore, are located in and around Braunschweig many smaller biotech companies.

Bachelor (6 semesters)

In the Bachelor's degree in biology you expect theory and practice in equal quantities. You get a wide scientific base of chemistry, mathematics, physics, basic and advanced knowledge in the areas of biology:
Biochemistry / molecular biology, including biotechnology
Biodiversity: plants, animals, algae and fungi
Genetics
Microbiology
Cell biology: developmental biology, neurobiology, cell biology Plant
At the end of undergraduate studies, you submit with your three-month bachelor Work Your first independent scientific research.

Master (4 semesters)

In the Master's program, which connects directly to the Bachelor (study beginning in summer and winter semester), you go into current scientific issues.
There are the following priorities:
Biochemistry and Bioinformatics
Genetics
Infection Biology
Microbiology
Cell Biology
In a compulsory part of the course you will receive in-depth insight into all five areas. This is followed by an optional section in which you specialize in two areas. Special emphasis will be on the cooperation of current research projects directly placed in the various working groups.
At the end of the master's program you specialize in your 6-month Master's thesis on a current scientific issue. With the master's degree you have acquired the qualification for a subsequent promotion.
