The Initiatives

The General Student Committee (AStA) is part of the legally established student self-administration of the TU Braunschweig. The AStA board is elected every semester by the student parliament (StuPa). We take care of the political representation of students and try to improve the quality of studies and teaching by representing your interests in the faculties and subjects, the student representatives and departmental group councils. Furthermore we hold events, such as parties, lectures and workshops on various topics.

The AStA also has a Department for International Students and a Department for International Affairs:

• The AStA Department for International Students provides assistance in problems and difficulties that international students may face. It is elected by the plenary session of the international students.
• The AStA Department for International Affairs aims that all students perceive and enrich the diversity of the international life at the TU Braunschweig. We want to strengthen the contact between German and international students and we also support the exchange with foreign universities.

The Erasmus Student Network Braunschweig (ESN) is an association of students from the TU Braunschweig that are united by one common goal: To give you the best experience during your stay here! Most of us have already studied abroad, so we know what you’re looking for!  We organize cultural events, take trips to amazing places and celebrate legendary partys. Also, if you have any problems or questions we try our best to help you. Our services are not only for Erasmus students - everyone is welcome. We are encouraging the exchange between people of all origins.

The international team of the Gauss Friends was founded in 2008. For us, the famous Braunschweig mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss stands as a symbolic figure for the cultural and cross-border unification of the sciences. As mathematician, astronomer, geodesist, physicist, linguistic genius and "host of science", he brings together students of all nationalities and Braunschweig citizens in the Gauss House.

Thanks to the cultural diversity in our team, the many languages and intercultural experiences, there is a climate of open-mindedness in which foreign cultures meet in a friendly atmosphere. In the Gauss House, our intercultural meeting place (Güldenstr. 8, 38100 Braunschweig), we offer many events every week, such as international country evenings, theatre plays, language get-togethers and cooking courses, thus building a bridge between culture and science.

Our motto is: We don't have to understand everything, but we can all have fun together and learn from each other.

The International House is the first contact point for all international students at the TU Braunschweig. We advise you on your choice of study programme and admission requirements, support you in the application process and welcome you to the TU Braunschweig.

We will answer the first questions about the start of your studies upon your enrolment, and provide you with all important information you need. At the beginning of the semester, we organise a welcome programme together with other student and university initiatives, and throughout the whole course of your studies, we are your contact for all questions concerning studies, residence regulations and financing.

First steps for international exchange students

inTU is a tutorial and workshop programme that supports international and German students at the start of their studies. In weekly tutorials, students from higher semesters provide you with information about the German university system and give tips on how to organize your studies. You will learn more about the German culture, get in touch with your German and international fellow students and can further improve your German language skills.

inTU is currently offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences. If you are studying one of these subjects, sign up!

We are committed to supporting our international students to feel welcome at the university and the city and to help them successfully complete their studies. At the same time, we want to offer our local students the opportunity to get a better understanding of other cultures. Therefore we have developed the SCOUT programme.

In the SCOUT programme we bring together international and German students in tandems. For one semester we offer you a fixed framework programme for intercultural exchange with different individual and group activities. In this way new friendships between different cultures are created and all participants train their intercultural competence.

Do you find it difficult to understand everything in German lectures, seminars or internships? Would you like more support in preparing German exams, reading academic texts or writing laboratory reports? Then register for the S.o.S. programme!

S.o.S. stands for "Studying without language barriers". It is a peer-teaching programme in which German-speaking students support their international fellow students in their studies. The German students are qualified as language coaches and then offer intercultural learning groups in which you work on the contents of a course you attend together. Difficulties in understanding the technical language can be discussed straight away. While working in these study groups, you will also practice your German language skills, acquire important working methods for your studies and make contacts with German students.

The Center for School Research and Teachers’ Training (Z_SchuLe) is involved in the Gauss-House project with the goal to meet new challenges for future teachers in everyday school life in a globalized world. Z_SchuLe is particularly committed to improve the conditions for international students studying in Germany and for german students interested in intercultural exchange. 

The Gauss-House project of TU Braunschweig is a melting pot for german and international students, where intercultural events take place and existing counseling offers are supplemented in a casual atmosphere.The aim is to strengthen the welcome culture at TU Braunschweig and to promote the exchange between German and international students.

In cooperation with the university and external partners, the Gauss House project offers international students programs such as the “Gauss Buddy Program”, “First Steps” (two-week orientation program) and counseling in a casual atmosphere at the Gauss House for freshmen at TU Braunschweig.

Every Tuesday from 6 pm onwards the Gauss House (Güldenstrasse 8, 38100 Braunschweig) opens its doors to anyone interested in intercultural exchange. In addition to theaters and cooking workshops, theme evenings with presentation on different countries takes place from 6 pm onwards. Afterwards, you have the opportunity for networking, try out some international dance and counseling at the Info-Point by Z_SchuLe employees.
