This expedition takes you on a journey through the history of building construction. Take a seat in one of our lecture halls and listen to a short lecture by Prof. Ulrike Fauerbach, in which she presents the teaching and research projects of the Institute of Building History and addresses current issues in the fields of architectural history and building technology as well as building archaeology.

Buildings will always be built, but rarely in a way that conserves resources. In order to change this, we at the TU Braunschweig are working intensively on this topic and are researching how the full potential of resource conservation can be exploited in the construction industry. One key method is the preservation and continued use of existing buildings. In order to preserve them, it is necessary to have information on the construction technology used at the time and on today's repair options. The Institute of Steel Construction collects and researches this information. Be inspired by the diverse research in this field, explore exhibits, exemplary buildings and ongoing experiments on our expedition into the topic of building preservation.

In the future, the construction industry will have to meet the growing demand for buildings with fewer resources and lower emissions. Our research addresses these issues with innovative approaches to the construction site of the future and the use of 3D printing.As part of this expedition, we will take you to the large-scale equipment in the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory and the Digital Construction Site, where we will show you how 3D printing is revolutionizing construction - efficiently, sustainably, and in a way that conserves resources.

Bridges, roofs and skyscrapers are typical applications in steel construction. At the Institute of Steel Construction at the Technical University of Braunschweig, tests are carried out on load-bearing capacity, service life and effects. On the expedition, we will take you to tests on current projects: Repair welding on bridges, additive manufacturing (3D printing) in steel construction, determining the service life of load-bearing structures, and experiments in the wind tunnel.

In and around our experimental hall, we show you experiments and exhibits that we use to study the effects of climate change on water, water bodies and our resources. We offer insights into our main research areas, such as new and renewable energy sources and preventing damage from extreme events. At the climate station, we explain the components of a weather station and how they work. You can also use our wave and current channels to observe the effects of climate change on our coastal and inland waters.

Globally, the building and construction sector is a key factor influencing life today and in the future. From now on, we need to build more sustainably, more climate-friendly and more flexibly. At the same time, we are expected to maintain the level of safety and reliability of our buildings. The Institute for Building Materials, Concrete Construction and Fire Safety (iBMB) conducts research and provides education to achieve these goals. On our tour, we would like to introduce you to our current research focus and demonstrate this by showing manufacturing processes and tests under (extreme) normal conditions and in case of fire.

Through innovative technologies, we can turn wastewater into valuable products: clean water for irrigation, electrical energy, and even fertilizer! Every drop of wastewater has the potential to be used as a source of energy, a source of nutrients and for reuse. In this way, we can strengthen the circular economy and protect the environment. On our expedition, we at the Institute of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, will show you some impressive experimental set-ups and exciting hands-on experiments around the topic of wastewater as a resource.

Discover the rooms of the IDAS Institute, where a small exhibition of student projects awaits you. All of them were created in the context of the city of Braunschweig. Exactly this context - the city of Braunschweig - we will have in front of our eyes, looking at it from the 15th floor of the Okerhochhaus. These projects - from cultural rafts on the river Oker, to filling in gaps between buildings, to large new school buildings - can be understood in the form of models, drawings or texts in relation to our city and the TU Braunschweig.

The Robotic Timber Studio demonstrates the connection between architecture, craftsmanship and digitisation in timber construction, from the detail to the whole building. Discover our collaborative robot and gain an insight into current research and theory in the field of in the field of digitisation in timber construction. After a short introduction to the subject, you can see for yourself how production on the robot works. Experience how future developments will contemporary architectural expression and the manufacturing process - from tree to architectural element.

Through the design and use of places in the city, we can learn a lot about planner's ideas about everyday life, people's daily journeys and needs . Through this, we can recognise which activities and which groups of people are considered important. Buildings and urban structures remain in place for many years, so that places built with a different understanding of society can be assessed critically today. The walk looks at how our daily lives in the city are still affected by outdated understandings of power and dominance. The walk was prepared by students from the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences and intends to encourage a different perception of public spaces. Human-induced changes to ecosystems are at the heart of our teaching and research. Measure water stress in urban trees and experience the tropical forest virtually. Discover ultra-fine particles in the air. Understand the relationship between algae and mercury in the ocean. Distinguish between grain sizes and compare the water permeability of soils. Use a microscope to identify aquatic organisms and water quality, or get up close to ticks.

At the Institute of Geosystems and Bioindication at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, we investigate climate variability and the effects of climate change and anthropogenic influences on biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Join us on an expedition into the world of research and practice - from the field to the laboratory. Get to know the equipment, look at tiny creatures under the microscope and learn about the challenges of research in remote places such as the Northwest Territories in Canada or the highlands of Tibet.t.

Visit the world's largest wave machine and a state-of-the-art flow system used for scientific experiments on the excursion to the Large Wave Current Flume at the Coastal Research Centre in Hanover. During demonstrations, steep and breaking waves will be generated in the 300-metre-long flume, providing an insight into the dynamics of waves.

Here you can discover how research is addressing the challenge of creating a comfortable indoor climate alongside climate change and the transformation of the energy infrastructure. This does not necessarily mean “more technology”, but a clever combination of technologies and building materials. The Institute for Building Climatology and Energy in Architecture is testing new, innovative concepts directly in the living laboratory and investigating how the combination of the physical building properties of clay can be used with the advantages of a reversible heat pump and a PV system.
