University competition Papieratlas

The Papieratlas has been mapping the sustainable paper procurement of German universities through the use of Blue Angel recycled paper since 2016. Thanks to the great interest and commitment of the invited universities, the university competition Papieratlas has established itself as a fixed component - alongside the city competition held since 2008 and the district competition added in 2018.

The TU Braunschweig has participated in the competition since 2022. Together with some volunteers, the Green Office takes care of collecting the data on paper use and submitting the applications.

The TU Braunschweig receives the "Newcomer of the year" award 2023. Within one year, the university has increased the proportion of Blue Angel-labeled paper in its administration by 50.02 percentage points to 62.71 percent, the highest increase compared to the previous year.

By using recycled paper, the TU Braunschweig has saved 190,396 liters of water and 42,957 kWh of energy compared to virgin fiber paper. The amount of water saved covers the daily drinking water requirements of 1,573 people. The energy saving corresponds to the annual energy consumption of 12 three-person households.

In 2021, Braunschweig Technical University used 12.69 percent recycled paper with the Blue Angel in its administration. The recycled paper quota from the previous year is not available. In the future, the Technische Universität Braunschweig plans to increase the proportion of recycled paper. By using recycled paper, the Technische Universität Braunschweig has saved 55,802 liters of water and 12,590 kWh of energy compared to virgin fiber paper. The amount of water saved covers the daily drinking water needs of 461 people. The energy saving corresponds to the annual energy consumption of 3 three-person households.
