History of science with focus on the history of pharmacy

This lecture gives an insight into the history of science. Selected examples from different eras (from antiquity to the early 20th century) will illustrate how knowledge works and how specific forms of knowledge, which today we call scientific knowledge, have developed. The shared theme of these examples is the tension-filled relationship between science, politics and society. A script and a PowerPoint Presentation are available. The final examination takes the form of a short presentation by the students. Pharmacy students are to deliver abstracts on selected subjects. If anyone is interested, a guided tour through the historical collection of pharmacies of the "Braunschweigesches Landesmuseum" will be offered. Course attendance is mandatory for Pharmacy students, and it can be complemented by a self-contained seminar (Friday/Saturday), which is offered in each semester on different subjects.

Students from other faculties: Please note that this is a one-hour-per week lecture course (1 CP). As a rule, you need 3 CPs for any sub-unit of a module. It is possible to combine the course with other lecturecourses or seminars of the same length offered by our department. Students from many different study courses and from different faculties are allowed to participate, especially if they are enrolled in the master course "culture of the techno-scientific world" (Kultur der Technisch-Wissenschafttlichen Welt) or if they study humanities on a masters or bachelor level. For details (credit points, student papers etc.), please contact the person responsible in your faculty: The dean (Studiendekan) or the study course coordinator (Studiengangskoordinator).
