Information on the Microsoft 365 campus agreement at TU Braunschweig

TU Braunschweig has joined the federal agreement for the “Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES)” program. This means that all university employees have access to Microsoft 365 E3 licenses, in particular for MS Office.  
Students can also use Microsoft 365 E3 on their personal devices under the “Student Advantage Benefits” program.

Please note!

Regulations governing staff’s and students’ access to the online products are still being finalized. Thank you for your patience!  
In the meantime, staff should only use the KMS licenses for:  

  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus  
  • Windows 11 Education

What’s included in Microsoft 365?

The agreement provides you with Microsoft 365 E3 licenses, which are assigned to individual users and require registration with Microsoft. Under certain conditions, you can use MS Office on work devices without registering. For more information, see the section “Local copy of Office Professional Plus.”

Microsoft 365 E3 includes the following products and services:

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (Office 365 E3 EDU): Use on up to 5 Windows or Mac computers, 5 tablets, and 5 smartphones. Please note that, for security reasons, the Outlook mobile app may not be used for official purposes.
  • Windows 10/Windows 11 Education upgrade license  
  • Client Access Licenses (Core CAL): For Windows Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint, and Skype for Business  
  • Office 365 online applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint (web versions), OneDrive, SharePoint, and MS Teams

Due to data protection concerns, the use of these cloud services is currently not recommended.

Who can use the licenses?  


The licenses are available exclusively to:  

  • Employees of TU Braunschweig (MTV and WMA), for both official and private devices  
  • Students of TU Braunschweig under the “Student Advantage Benefit” (only for private devices)  

Lecturers, part-time staff and emeriti are not eligible to use these licenses.  

Contract term  
The agreement is valid until 30 April 2030.  

License terms  
Use of the licenses is governed by the manufacturer’s licensing conditions. For details, see the Microsoft Higher Education Framework Agreement.  

Local copy of Microsoft Office Professional Plus  
Under certain conditions, you can install Microsoft Office on official TU Braunschweig devices without registering personally with Microsoft:  

  • One installation per authorized person on their personal work computer  
  • Only on official TU Braunschweig devices, not on private or non-TU devices  
  • Only authorized employees may use it; use by lecturers, guests or other third parties is not permitted  
  • Installation in publicly accessible university areas (e.g. libraries, labs, computer pools) is allowed  
  • Students may not use this local copy  
  • Activation is handled exclusively via the GITZ KMS server, as with previous agreements  
  • There is no right to downgrade to Office Standard; Office Professional Plus must always be installed
