The COABS (‘Co-adapted Braunschweig’) project was awarded the ‘Climate Lighthouse 2026’ prize at the Lower Saxony state competition ‘Klimakommunal 2026’. The competition recognises local authority commitment and innovative projects in the fields of climate protection and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
As part of the project (2022–2025), the City of Braunschweig, the Technical University of Braunschweig and stakeholders from the local community worked together to develop the foundations for a municipal climate adaptation strategy. To this end, climate risks were analysed, key measures in the areas of water, health and biodiversity were developed, and initial pilot projects were implemented. Representing the Technical University of Braunschweig were the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism and the Institute of Geoecology, with its research groups on Climatology and Environmental Meteorology, Landscape Ecology and Environmental Systems Analysis, and Soil Science.
