Profile

(Status 09/2013)

Martin Pietrek

Age: 28
Course of studies / Profession: Graduate Engineer, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering
Uni / Faculty / or School / Class: TU Braunschweig, Fak. Mechanical Engineering
I am involved in the construction because: the project is a great challenge, you can learn a lot, it is a lot of fun and it gives us the opportunity to present the engineering profession in an interesting way.
My tasks in the project: design, calculation, construction, administrative project management.
My favourite paper: Japanese paper, because it is super light and super strong and gives our Wilhelminchen "wings".
Where I would like to fly to: New Zealand, because I'm attracted by the idea that you can't get any further away without already being on your way home (and of course because of the indescribable landscape).

Andreas Scholz

Age: 34
Course of studies / Profession: Graduate Engineer, Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering
Uni / Faculty: TU Braunschweig, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering I am building because: .
My tasks in the project: .preliminary design, leading the aerodynamic & flight-mechanical design, spar construction, launcher
My favourite paper: Folded paper, because you can only transform a light and soft material into a considerably stiffer component with the same weight by skilful forming.
This is where I would like to fly to: To Antarctica, but I've only just been there....

Thomas Krüger

Age: 29
Course of studies / Profession: Research assistant at the Institute of Flight Guidance, TU Braunschweig, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
I build because: it is something special
My tasks in the project: building small parts, electronic equipment
My favourite paper: banknote paper
This is where I would like to fly: 15 metres in any direction with Carolo Wilhelminchen

Stefan Marth

Age: 25
Course of studies: Aerospace Engineering, Master
University: TU Braunschweig
I am involved in the construction because: I am excited by the challenge of building something that has never been done before and of exceeding the apparent limits of paper as a material through constructive solutions.
My tasks in the project: construction management; (planning, preparation, execution and testing)
My favourite paper: Japanese paper, because it forms a real plane out of a skeleton.
This is where I would like to fly to: To the South Pole, because I have never landed on a kilometre-thick ice runway.

Carl-Simon Sandvoß

Age: 24 years
Course of studies / Profession: Aerospace Engineering
Uni / Faculty: TU Braunschweig, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
I'm building with you because: Who likes to let a failed world record attempt sit on their hands? And when do you get the opportunity to build an aeroplane out of paper with a wingspan that surpasses some jets?
My tasks in the project: design and construction of the tail boom
My favourite paper: 150g/m², rolled
This is where I would like to fly: To Japan and of course further than 15 metres - without breaking a spar

Isabel Metz

Age: 24
Course of studies / Profession: Master Mobility and Transport
University / Faculty / or School / Class: TU Braunschweig
I am building because: I already had a lot of fun with the preliminary project.
My tasks during the project: Besides working on the fuselage, ribs and spar, I was responsible for the conception and construction of the handles.
My favourite paper: note paper in all sizes and shapes to spontaneously record all important thoughts.
This is where I would like to fly to one day: Barra International Airport (EGPR) on the Scottish island of Barra - the only airfield in the world where scheduled flights take off from one of three runways on the beach.

Greta Gronau

Age: 26
Course of studies / Occupation: Research assistant at the Inst. for Particle Technology
Uni / Faculty: TU Braunschweig, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
I'm building because: I'm interested in how flexible paper can be turned into load-bearing wings with a span of 18 m through skilful structuring. But above all, it's fun!
My tasks in the project: gluing, folding, cutting and trimming.
My favourite paper: photo paper
This is where I would like to fly: 15 m to the world record

Michael Langkau

Age: 26
Course of studies / Profession: Master Aerospace Engineering
Uni / Faculty: TU Braunschweig I am involved in the construction because: I would like to deepen my own interests in my studies and be able to participate in the construction of an aircraft, far away from the theoretical daily routine.
My tasks in the project: planning, building and construction of spars and wings
My favourite paper: Japanese paper
This is where I would like to fly to: Australia and Hawaii

Jannik Zoller

Age: 22
Course of study / Profession: Bachelor Aerospace Engineering
University / Faculty / or School / Class: TU Braunschweig, Faculty 4 I'm building because: I can already gain an insight into calculation methods in aerodynamics and statics during my basic studies and the project is really cool.
My tasks in the project: Building ribs
My favourite paper: graph paper
This is where I would like to fly to: New Zealand

David Köhler

Age: 21
Course of studies: Master Aerospace Engineering
University / Faculty: TU Braunschweig, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering I am involved in the construction because: I can experience the complete development of an aircraft from the idea to the maiden flight and also influence it myself.
My tasks in the project: Support in conception and construction
My favourite paper: carbon paper
Where I would like to fly: around the world (and even further away)

Max Alex

Age: 15
School: IGS Wallstraße in Wolfenbüttel
I'm building because: I think aeroplanes are great and Galileo is my favourite programme. I saw the first world record attempt on TV. This time we can do it!
My tasks in the project: cutting, folding, gluing and lifting paper from the floor.
My favourite paper: burger paper
This is where I would like to fly to: America, Texas - to my cousin's house.

Nima Abbaspour

Age: 26
Course of studies / Profession: CSE (Computational Sciences in Engineering, Master)
University / Faculty / or School / Class: Technical University of Braunschweig/ Faculty 3 (Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences)
I build because: I have been interested in paper planes since my childhood and even then I built many planes for my friends. In addition, I would like to make more contacts with my fellow students and learn more about German culture and mentality.
My tasks for the project: cutting, gluing and folding
My favourite paper: A4 white
This is where I would like to fly to: Hawaii
