In the molecular sciences - an interdisciplinary research field combining chemistry, biology and physics - artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are integral to advancing data-driven, technology-based innovations.
In our AIMS Master's program, you'll gain expertise in advanced mathematics, Python programming and scientific software engineering, and deepen your knowledge in "Advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)". Based on your interests, you can choose one of three specializations:
In your selected track, you will deepen your field-specific knowledge and integrate it with your ML and AI skills during both a research lab and your master's thesis. The program's interdisciplinary modules enable you to develop advanced foreign-language and interpersonal competencies. During your studies, you'll also explore the ethical and social implications of applying AI in the molecular sciences.
The foundations comprise 4 compulsory modules (26 CP) to be completed during your first two semesters. In these core modules, you'll receive an introduction to AIMS and its participating research groups, deepen your mathematical knowledge, and familiarize you with Python programming and scientific software engineering.
Within the "Advanced Machine Learning and AI" area, you select three out of five elective modules. These courses focus on deep learning, machine learning and pattern recognition. The segment carries 15 CP and is normally completed in semesters 2 and 3.
Based on your interests and academic background, you can choose one of the following three specialization tracks:
In addition to a compulsory core module in each profile, you may choose from a range of elective courses. Together with the research lab, these components add up to 37 CP over the first three semesters. During the research lab, you will independently investigate a scientific question from your chosen specialization area and apply your data-driven AI methods. This hands-on experience also serves as direct preparation for the research phase of your master's thesis.
You must complete 12 CP in the Key Qualifications segment. 5 CP come from the mandatory "Ethics and Epistemology" module, in which you explore the ethical and social implications of AI applications in molecular sciences. The remaining 7 CP are earned through elective modules focused on language proficiency and interpersonal skills.
In the Capstone Module, you will complete your master's thesis. You'll independently investigate a research questions that aligns with your chosen specialization - merging a specific area of molecular sciences with the AI competencies you've acquired. Your results are documented in a written thesis, presented orally, and discussed in a scientific form. This 30 CP module is typically taken during the fourth semester.
Graduating with an AIMS Master's degree opens up a wide array of professional opportunities.
As a data science specialist in molecular sciences, you'll be ideally equipped for a scientific career as well as for responsible positions in research and development at AI start-ups or leading technology firms. Your skills will be essential wherever extensive molecular structure data are handled.
Shape the future of molecular-science research with your AI and ML expertise!
You can apply to the AIMS degree program via our online portal.
AIMS starts every year in the winter semester.
Application period for the winter semester:
As a prerequisite for admission the applicant must:
A degree program is suitable if:
For degree programs that do not award credit points according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, the respective workload must correspond to the respective credit points.
The AIMS degree program is taught entirely in English.
Therefore, sufficient English language proficiency must be demonstrated:
All other applicants must prove their English skills by achieving the minimum scores listed below in one of the following internationally recognized tests or equivalent examinations:
| English Test | Minimum Performance |
|---|---|
| TOEFL | 88 points |
| IELTS | Band 6.5 |
| Language Certificate (English Language Proficiency Report) of the Language Centre of TU Braunschweig | at least two skills at B2 level and two skills at C1 level |
The semester fee consists of three parts:
A new total is announced every semester. For the winter semester 2026/27, the fee is €472.50. If you are enrolling with us for the first time, this amount is payable as an enrollment fee upon matriculation (as you will see in your enrollment or application documents).
You can always find the current semester fee on the website of the Student Office.
