The Master’s degree programme in Biochemistry/Chemical Biology prepares you specifically for a career in research at the interface between chemistry and biology. You already have a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or in the life sciences and are now expanding your specialist knowledge from your undergraduate studies. You will specialise in an area of biochemistry characterised by the use of chemical methods.

Information on the study programme

As the “chemistry of life”, the newly shaped discipline of chemical biology forms a natural link between biology and chemistry alongside biochemistry.

Biochemists analyse the function of cellular components at the molecular level and their interaction in organisms. In chemical biology, new chemical methods, techniques and molecules are developed to study and manipulate biological systems and also to apply them to chemical problems.

The degree programme is strongly research-oriented and prepares you to work independently on complex scientific issues. In an introductory phase, students acquire different knowledge, taking into account the different degrees they have obtained. When choosing your area of specialisation, you will benefit from the great variety of subjects offered at TU Braunschweig

The following interdisciplinary areas of specialisation are available:

development of active substances (biochemistry, chemical synthesis, bioinorganic chemistry, systems biology, bioinformatics, structural biology, proteomics)
production of valuable substances (biocatalysis, molecular biotechnology, molecular spectroscopy, chemical synthesis)
design of molecular tools (biochemistry, bioinformatics, bioinorganic chemistry, chemical synthesis, systems biology, molecular spectroscopy, imaging)

The modular structure allows for individual combinations. Due to the close cooperation of TU Braunschweig with many renowned research institutions in the region and their international connections, there are many opportunities to specialise leading to excellent career prospects.

In terms of soft skills, you will learn to work successfully in a team, to communicate effectively with different target groups and to present your research results in an appropriate way. At the end of the Master’s programme, you will submit independent scientific research in the form of a Master’s thesis in English or German. With the Master’s degree, you can enrol in a doctoral programme at TU Braunschweig.
