Admission procedure 2022

You apply as usual via the Enrolment Office (or the International Office) for the Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture. You should enclose a letter of motivation with your application.

Here you will find a task published from 1 June that you will work on creatively. It is a small task for which you do not need much time. Images of your work sample will be requested by E-Mail as a file in PDF or JPG format before the selection interview..

You take part in a selection interview. You bring your work on the assignment to the selection interview and present it there in a few sentences. You will talk to teachers about your work sample, your motivation and your expectations of studying architecture.

Important: Only the interview is evaluated, not the letter of motivation or your work on the assignment.

Until now, university places were only awarded according to the university entrance qualification, i.e. usually according to the grade point average in the Abitur. With the new procedure, your chances increase if you are artistically talented and interested in constructive questions. No prior knowledge or a "portfolio" is expected (as in some artistic degree programmes).

Instead, you show your interest by means of a short letter of motivation and your creativity by means of a sample of your work. As already explained, neither of these will be assessed, but they will form the basis for a selection interview at the TU Braunschweig. This is an opportunity for you to get to know teachers and students.

The selection interview is graded and, together with your university entrance qualification grade (Abitur grade) of 49% and 51% respectively, forms the so-called procedure grade. It forms the basis for the ranking list and admission to the degree programme.

You submit your documents to the enrolment office of the TU Braunschweig from 1 June until 15 July together with your letter of motivation.

You will then receive an invitation to the selection interview (30 June or 21 July), which will be held in person this year. If you are unable to attend the interview, please contact us immediately.

Please have your work sample ready for the interview. Together with up to four other prospective students, you will sit opposite a professor and a research assistant. You will explain your idea and talk about your motivation for wanting to study architecture in Braunschweig.

The criteria of the interview and their evaluation are defined in the admission regulations:

§  4, (5) The interview contents refer to the respective documents of the applicants and test the following qualification characteristics:

•     Creative potential
•     Visual, spatial and spatio-temporal imagination
•     Ability to develop and present concepts
•     Understanding of form and structure as well as constructive questions
•     Ability to think critically, ethically and reflectively
•     Interest in analogue as well as digital media

§4, (6) Discussion of the above topics will be assessed as follows:

a) 0 to 15 points The candidate is able to respond constructively and creatively to the questions and problems posed in the discussion and to outline possible solutions.

b) 0 to 15 points The candidate is able to justify the submitted work sample in a coherent and committed manner and is able to verbalise the design criteria that led to the solution of the task in a comprehensible manner.

c) 0 to 15 points It is assessed whether the linguistic ability to reflect and express corresponds to the level required for the study of architecture.

§4, (7) Each participating member of the selection committee evaluates the selection interview according to the letters a to c of Para. 6. The individual evaluations are made with a weighting of 40% each for the letters a and b and 20% for the letter c. The evaluation is carried out in accordance with the following rules (...)

After the interview, it is a matter of waiting. All interviews are graded and, together with the Abitur grades, form a ranking. The selection committee determines up to which procedure grade is admitted.

If you are among the "best" in the ranking, you will receive an e-mail from the office of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences at short notice, possibly even before the end of the entire procedure, informing you that you may study at Braunschweig.

If you are in the middle of the field with your procedural grade, you will receive an acceptance or rejection of your study place from the Enrolment Office at the end of the entire procedure.

Last chance: After the rejections, there is often a move-up procedure if fewer applicants than expected accept their place.

Be quick! If you apply at the beginning of the application period, you will take part in the first interview on 30 June 2022.

If you achieve a good procedural grade here, you will already receive a letter from us shortly after the interview date stating that you may study in Braunschweig. You will only receive the official enrolment documents from the Admissions Office after the entire procedure has been completed, but you will already have received your acceptance letter from us. This means you can prepare for your studies at an early stage.

If you have not received an advance acceptance, this does not mean that you will not get a place. The cut-off mark for the final ranking will only be determined after the last selection interview. You may then still get a place at the university, or you can try to get a place via the move-up procedure.

• Apply for a place at the Admissions Office from 01.06.2022 and submit a letter of motivation together with all other documents. The earlier you apply, the sooner you can take part in the procedure.
• Register your interest in taking part in the selection interviews on 30.06. or 21.07.2021. Work on the work sample in parallel.
• IMPORTANT: You can only be invited to the interview if your application documents have been submitted in full to the Admissions Office.
• We will then invite you to your selection interview, the invitations will be sent out one week before the date.
• Shortly after the selection interviews, those with the best procedural grades will already receive confirmation that a place at the TU Braunschweig is secure.
• From around the beginning of September, the Admissions Office or the International Office will send out the enrolment documents for your Bachelor's degree programme. You must fill these out in order to enrol.
