Research:

Our research group is interested in understanding the physiology and metabolism of microorganisms. To that end, we apply a combination of experimental and computational methods to characterize the metabolism under different environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, nutrient composition, light etc.) but also during interaction with other organisms. GC/MS and LC/MS based approaches are applied to get a broad insight into the metabolic capacities.

A major focus lies on the investigation of the metabolism of marine bacteria belonging to the Roseobacter group. Members of this group are widespread in the marine environment and harbor distinct metabolic capacities that enable survival in certain ecological niches. In the last years a detailed characterization of the metabolism of two model organisms belonging to this group was achieved. This knowledge will be now used to extend the analyses to unravel the metabolic cross-talk with algae.
