Laser Operation Instructions and Safety Precautions
All lasers in the laser chemistry department are classified as class 4 lasers according to national regulations. This means that they can be very dangerous for eyes and skin not only by direct irradiation, but also by diffusely scattered irradiation, and that they can induce fire or explosion.
Rules for experimental set-ups:
- Avoid laser beams in eye height
- Keep the beam path short and simple
- Use beam dumps
- Consider reflections. Use appropriate shields if they cannot be avoided
- Blacken reflective surfaces
- Do not use loose optical components in your set-up
- Instruct all people entering your laser lab (students, guests, colleagues etc.)
Daily routine:
- Switch on the warning lights
- Use goggles
- Do not wear objects with reflective surfaces (watches, jewelry, belt buckles etc.)
- Be careful when using tools
- If you have to bend down, turn around and close your eyes
